An odd question . . . .

How many times do you change an 8 month's nappy in a day? My childminder is changing DS's just once or twice a day at the most and I am not sure if this is enough or if I am a bit too eager at the weekends! DS doesn't seem to be suffering with nappy rash and he isn't one to grumble a great deal when his nappies are getting full so I wonder if that it is the reason. (and I am just being a silly moo).

My childminder is fantastic and I don't really want to go wading in causing problems if the general consensus is that this is perfectly normal.

Hi Libb - if he doesn't have nappy rash and isn't unhappy then I guess there probably isn't a problem. I used to just change my DS automatically first thing, before and after his naps and after his bath so about 5/6 times a day and obviously at other times if needed. But I probably did that more as I thought it would be what I would want (?!) iykwim than because I thought he needed it.

Agree with rudydudy - 5/6 times a day and obviously when there's a parcel in there. And long as he's happy .... but Libb, isn't it hanging off him

yes, 5 - 6 times a day, so that should be three times by your childminder if you send him out in a clean one and she has him for over 6 hours

Yep - 5/6 times like everyone else

DD is at nursery 8-6 and is normally changed 3x (sometimes 4 if she poos just after being changed). Obviously I put her in a clean one when I get her up at about 7 ish. So thats 4 times in a day plus bedtime.

TBH though I probably change her less at home maybe 3 times in total plus bedtime. Unless its a day like yesterday when it was about 6 times and each time dirty.

so I wouldn't be out of order to mention it? he seems happy enough and is very chilled (another worry, another story) about these things . . .

Next question, how to do it without sounding picky? I did try the "he's had a touch of nappy rash so would you mind keeping an eye on it?" tactic but it didn't seem to make much difference.

If he were unhappy about it then I wouldn't think twice about mentioning it! Blimey I am drippy.

i am a childminder and change nappies at 11am and 4pm. I do change if child has pooed or is really wet and also if they have nappy rash i tend to change 3 rather than 2! I really wouldnt worry unless nappy rash is a problem! Napppies like pampers and huggies are very good and hold alot more than cheaper brands. Also maybe your baby is so busy when at childminders that it is a shame to interrupt play and therefore thats why it only gets done twice!

DS (13 months) has his nappy changed at least 3 times a day at nursery (think they have 3 times when nappies always get changed) and more of course when he has produced yet another nappy full of poo. Plus gets changed 1st thing and last thing.

It's when he's at home that I think I am less good - he probably gets changed 4 times a day then

I'm the same PicadillyCircus. TBH was surprised at all the 5/6 times a day. Although have to say that Libb's once a day seemed infrequent. DD has never had nappy rash (and DS never did) - although sometimes a sore bottom but thats because of constipation I think.

Bonkerz, I think you are probably right! He does tend to take it all in his stride. And he has a better social life than me that is for sure! He has been to the cinema twice since October, various christmas parties, toddler group and swimming!

I did mention it to her this evening - I just asked her if I were providing enough nappies and if she could let me know if a rash flares up as he is teething . . . she is so fantastic with DS I don't want her to feel I am being picky about a little thing.

Suzy, no disrepect but do you (and others) mind if I don't mention my friends in the computer? . She already thinks I am batty enough.

Well, you can pretend we're not real if you want to...

She just phoned me up to check that I was happy with what she is doing - I feel really guilty. I told her that I was sorry I gave the impression I was questioning her, it wasn't my intention at all. I also said that if I were to have any problems then I would be sure to sit down with her and iron out any concerns with her opinion included. She is more of an expert than I am!

I don't think there is much more I can say to her but do you think making a little gesture would help? I really don't want to upset her.

Oh Libb - bless! I think you sound like you were quite tactful in the way you raised it...I'm sure you don't need to make a little conciliatory gesture. I wouldn't read too much into her ringing you to check that everything is okay....
