Hi DC is a young toddler, loves swimming -there's family swim this afternoon but it's actually like -4c outside

I'm guessing we skip it this week?

I've posted this question on this board in hope of some kind replies not the big boards/ chat/aibu etc - it's a free for all out there

As long as it’s not -4 in the pool I don’t see an issue?
just bring extra layers and dry their hair properly

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 12/01/2025 14:12

It's not -4 inside?!

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 12/01/2025 14:13

Why not? Unless going to play in the snow, best to tire them out. Warm coat and hat for after.

Why would you miss it? Just make sure they are wrapped up when they go back outside, just as you would even if they hadn’t been swimming.

soupfiend · 12/01/2025 14:17

This is in an inside heated pool? You havent explained and if so are you driving to and from or getting public transport?

Or are you talking about cold water swimming in a river or sea?

If the latter, do you do this regularly, some people go every day

thismummydrinksgin · 12/01/2025 14:18

I'd go just make sure he's properly dry before going outside, dry hair with the hairdryer and perhaps a bit of talc. X

thismummydrinksgin · 12/01/2025 14:19

However please use the weather as a reason to skip if you should so wish to have a day on the sofa 😂

jannier · 12/01/2025 14:28

As others have said dry before leaving....no different to bathing at home.

Peppapiggedout · 12/01/2025 14:31

I was just checking, I have no one irl I can ask...

My daughter had a swimming lesson this morning didn't occur to me to skip it. Just wrap them up after and maybe give their hair a blast with the hairdryer so it's not soaking wet

Your family?

You said its a family swim?

This is indoors then?

december2020 · 12/01/2025 14:36

Do you mean outdoor swimming?
Then maybe a skip if you're not used to swimming outside in the cold.

But if it's inside and especially if the pool is heated, it is totally fine!

If you're not driving (so getting there and back by public transport or walking) just make sure to wrap up warm and bring a warm hat and gloves.

DS4 was swimming this morning and it was -5 here too and he was totally fine :)

Peppapiggedout · 12/01/2025 14:41

Ok please don't all pile on me

I was literally just checking

DC was prem and in hospital for months

I'm new to normal parent life so please just leave it now

You can skip it if you want to but no harm will come to them going to an inside heated pool.

And I understand the preemie anxiety, DS is 12 now and every so often google throws up an old video of him breathing strangely as a small baby that I took for the doctor and it drags me back to that time immediately. I still struggle to listen to Wires by Athlete.

Enjoy your healthy toddler xxx

A family swim is surely a session put on for families to attend

At a pool?

I completely misunderstood I thought it was OP going out with her family to the sea or something. Dont know why I thought that. Probably because a lot of people locally do that

Bunny2006 · 12/01/2025 19:59

I hope you had a good swim if you went :)

I took my 2 year old (well soon to be 2) swimming today and she's stopped napping at home very recently but still gets tired and will sleep in the pram or sling, so afterwards despite the weather we went for a walk and she fell asleep straight away, she was just wearing warm clothes, hat, and foot muff on the pram. Good idea about drying hair though, although my girl doesn't have much so a towel still does a good job

Superscientist · 12/01/2025 20:10

My daughter had a swimming lesson this week and I made the decision to cancel it. The roads were too bad to drive and there were a number of road closures. I had the option to get the train which I was going to do but then realised that I had a 10 minute walk to get to and from the swimming pool and the time of the train meant she would have had to get dressed quickly and not have time to dry her hair before heading outside or it would be another hour before the next train which would have got us home close to bed time with not enough time for dinner and due to food allergies can't eat out. As it was a school day it would have been difficult to do a later bed time.

For me it isn't necessarily a silly question by one that is heavily dependent on the transport methods. In a car absolutely, walking more than a few minutes with wet hair and not nestled cosily in a pram I would give it a miss.
