We are taking our 3 dc on their first holiday in 6 weeks before dc4 arrives!! YAY!!!

Can someone please help me get a list together of what i will need to take with me as i really haven't got a clue and also anything that might be handy.

Its a self catering holiday so i presume I will need to take food and bedding etc??

Any advice will be gratefully recieved.

Thanks in advance

Wherea re you going ? You can sometimes hire bedding and towels, much easier, and even preorder basic supplies or have an online supermarket delivery made in time for your arrival.

Basics would include milk, tea/coffee, sugar, food for first dinner and breakfast . Nappies/wipes if you need them. All purpose cleaner & j cloths, washing up liquid , dw tablets and washing powder(I normally take a few tablets of each). Teacloth. Toilet roll, soap. Cool bag/box for outings and freezer blocks, waterproof picnic rug.

Specifically to remember to pack - toiletries, pjs, favourite bedtime toys/blanket,few books, clothes with fleeces/jumpers and waterproofs.

PMSL at Ruby's list. Rope?? Is that for a family expedition up Everest?

pointydog · 04/05/2008 12:50

a fan and paddling pool - har. You travel light, then, ruby.

But it's a good starting point, just score half the stuff off and off you go.

We try to travel light (but then we only have one DC). Have just got back from caravan holiday, this is what we took:

Food crate:
Picnic set
Tea towels, washing liquid & sponge
Pots and pans (in case the ones supplied are gross)
Teabags
Few jars of baby food
Bibs
Kitchen towel
Bog roll (though this should be provided)
Stuff for dinner for the first night (easy to cook)
Bottled water

Bag for DS:
Calpol
Nappies, wipes, Vaseline etc (depends if you have DC in nappies, obv)
Few toys and books
Water cup
Fruit, rice cakes etc for DS snacks

Clothes bag:
Towels
Sleeping bags for DS
Walking shoes
Sandals
Waterproofs
Fleeces
Bare minimum of T-shirts, trousers, undies for us and DS (you are allowed to be grungy in a caravan)
Woolly hats

Washbags:
Shampoo
Shower gel
Deodorant
Toothpaste & brushes
DH's shaving stuff

Plus:
Travel cot & spare sheet
Pop-up tent for beach
Portable highchair
Baby carrier
Buggy
Camera
Blackout blind for DS's room
Bucket & spade
Football
Books for me & DH
Playing cards

Don't bother taking loads of basics like food and loo roll etc, just take what you need for the first day and do a supermarket shop when you get there.

Please lets see your winter list ruby!

I always make sure bedding and towels are provided when we go on holiday, then I take

Sharp knife
T towels( they do provide but never enough)
bin bags

Then usual clothes for all
Ds has large rucksack full of bits and pieces
that he is responsible for

the babies don't need that much except for the pram and nappies

Dh takes the camera, mobiles and such like

For the first night I take a casserole that unfreezes on the way down. Also take pasta, tuna, baked beans, olive oil, spuds for a couple of basic meals.

i'm LOVING these lists!

We usually take cafetiere, kitchen roll, teatowels, dishcloth, WUL, clingfilm and if there's a dishwasher/washing maching i'd take enough tablets for the week.

My top tip is to find out if Tesco online will deliver to your cottage and set up an order to arrive as you do (and if you can fact it book another to arrive as you get home).

you also want to find out what there is in the way of dvd/video/freeview so you know whether to take for the kids or if there's cbeebies (in our case!)

I always take things like games, jigsaws, new colouring/puzzle books/pens and paper to keep wee ones amused. And the last 2 times have forgotten to take a "snuggly" (ie soft toy) for ds (now 5) so must remember that next time...he has them in his bed but hadn't realised they were important to him!

Enjoy!

I thought you meant you were going on a religious education self catering holiday.

pointydog · 04/05/2008 23:28

If I were going to take a paddling pool on holiday and then spend half a day filling the bugger up with water, 'supervising' re the safety of any other kids who wandered past looking for fun and then dismantling it all, I really honestly and truly would not bother going away on holiday in the first place.
