Murmur on heart

Just looking to be talked down!...

Just been to the Doctors with my 2 year old (27 months) to review asthma medication he has recently been prescribed.
Whilst doing the usual checks, the Dr heard a murmur on my LOs heartbeat and has referred him to the hospital for a scan. I'm kicking myself because I was a bit shocked and didn't really ask any questions about it.
Does anyone have any experience of this with a toddler? A quick google is quite reassuring and terrifying in equal measures!
I have no idea how long we will wait for a scan.
Anyone been through similar?

just to add, I'm not asking for medical advice, just for some reassuring similar stories

Thank you

Well my friend has a heart murmur and is in her mid 40’s and it has never caused her any issues. Hope that helps with the long term outcome.

My ds12 had one when he was little (toddler age). We had the scan and was told it was 'innocent' so just the way his heart sounded and nothing to worry about. They said he would likely grow out of it as his body grew and changed. But if we ever noticed any issues with breathing / pain / lips turning blue, then we should mention the murmur when we got medical advice. He never did and the the last time he had a doctors checkup (about a year or two ago for a chesty cough ) they couldn't hear it!
So I think it must have disappeared, as they said it likely would!

Fingers crossed you get the follow up quickly and it turns out to be innocent too Flowers

Thank you

I have read that it can just be a murmur but have no future complications. Thanks for sharing.

I have a heart murmur and I’m nearly 40. Doesn’t cause me issues and the doctors aren’t concerned.
Hope that puts your mind at risk a bit x

My daughter had a heart murmur picked up when she was born. So think they would have picked his up if it was significant.
My daughters was due to a valve being too narrow so it was corrected with surgery quite easily and wasn't open heart surgery or anything. Obviously it was worrying at the time but she is fine now although needs check ups.

We've just been through the same thing with my 2 year old. I was so worried, was sure there was going to be a problem. Appointment came in about 5 weeks, and was told it was an innocent murmur. Apparently it's really common in little ones but not harmful at all.

EducatingArti · 09/01/2025 07:11

I had a heart murmur as a baby and it disappeared by age 2. I think it is common for children to "grow out of them"

sashh · 09/01/2025 07:44

A murmur is just an extra or different sound to the norm. They are incredibly common in toddlers.

As children grow on the outside their insides also grow. Your heart (assuming healthy) is about the size of a loosely clenched fist, and that is the same for a 2 year old and a 40 year old.

But some bits of our bodies can grow a bit quicker or slower so it isn't 'normal' but in the sense that it isn't usual. Eg I'm 5ft 0, that is abnormal for an adult but doesn't indicate anything wrong.

A murmur is nothing to worry about, what causes it can be and in most cases what causes it is nothing.

Please try not to worry.

My son was found to have a heart murmur at age 3. Went for scan and was told it was a functional murmur, nothing to worry about. At some point it disappeared.

Thank you everyone!!
Very reassuring!

Good to get it checked out.. I'm trying not to worry about it as I'm sure it will be absolutely fine.

Really appreciate all of your replies.

My son, his paternal gran and my dad all have/had heart murmurs. innocent and didn't affect life in slightest. I remember the worry when they told me about my ds though.

woulducouldushouldu · 09/01/2025 20:09

57 and have a heart murmur. Never caused me an issue. Only my situation but hopefully reassures that this is not the end of the world

user1471453601 · 09/01/2025 20:17

This has happened to me . Twice, once on being admitted to hospital for an arranged surgey and once by a GP.

I had a echo cardiogramne. Nothing wrong with my heart at all. I'm in my my mid 70s.

Fingers crossed, it will be the same for your child.

HappyHolidai · 09/01/2025 20:21

My dad is 74 and has a heart murmur. Never caused him any problems. One of my cats has one too, when she is scared. Again, no problem.

(I actually do have a heart condition and can provide plenty of positive stories from there but hopefully you will never need to bother about that because it'll be innocent and harmless).
