Are formula fed babies more likely to sleep through the night?

Hi everyone,

recently had a baby and have been advised by the hospital to combi feed.

After reading more into breastfeeding it seems like Bf babies have less chance of sleeping through the night.

Curious to know when your babies slept through and if they are formula, ebf or combi. X

I’ve had one of each and both were exactly the same sleep wise. I’d say I get more sleep with the bf one as I feed lying down and cosleep whereas the formula fed one I was having to get out of bed to make it.

why have the hospital suggested combi feeding?

litepop · 04/01/2025 18:39

My Dd was exclusively bottle fed (shock horror on MN) - I was actually unable to bf doe to the medication I was on.

Dd never slept through the night in the first year - apart from the odd miracle here & there.

Why did they advise to combi feed?

My EBF kids both sleep well at night

My sister's EBF kids sleep awfully at night

IMO milk has nothing to do with it - you either get a good sleeper or you don't

Why did they advise to combi feed?

Why is that even relevant?

Babbitbaddit · 04/01/2025 18:40

Both of mine were breastfed. My first slept through from six weeks onwards. My second is nearly 3 and breastfed till 1.5… he still doesn’t sleep through

My supply is low and she was not gaining weight. X

My 2 both ebf never been great sleepers. I've considered combi feeding for if I have a 3rd as especially once they get past 1 year old mine have a really strong breastfeed to sleep association and want feeding back to sleep if they wake up. My own fault probably haha.
Also co slept with both of mine from 6 months old.

SouthLondonMum22 · 04/01/2025 18:42

I’ve formula fed since birth and they have all slept through from an early age.

8 weeks, 6 weeks & 6 weeks.

Never had to get out of bed either. Had a perfect prep machine upstairs for nights with everything all to hand ready.

litepop · 04/01/2025 18:43

@Pandasnacks sounds more like the anti-bottle feeding brigade are here.

Op is following the medical advice she was given. The reason for her combo feeding is irrelevant to the question she asked.

As a mother of 2 formula fed babies, I can confirm that is absolute bullshit.

Combi feeding won't help your supply. If she's having plenty of wet and dirty nappies you can just carry on if you want to and see if your supply increases. If the weight gain issue is a concern then by all means try combi but to keep your supply you need to pump effectively at the times she has a bottle.

Cashew1 · 04/01/2025 18:44

Dd didn't sleep through the night until she was 3, she was ebf. The day after she stopped breastfeeding she slept through the night every single night (bar illness) and still does to this day, age 6. So I have to conclude she was just waking for milk!

Scottishskifun · 04/01/2025 18:44

Nope it's a bit of a myth!
The difference with formula fed babies is that dad can take a turn on the night feeds.

Both of mine were breastfed, DS1 was combi fed for a few weeks and slept terribly. Tried introducing a night time bottle of EBM still slept terribly.
DS2 EBF slept in 3-4 hour stints from birth til about 8 months then he slept in 6 hour stints til 12 months then slept 7-7.

My DD was combi fed (similar issues, due to prematurity in our case) and I found she slept better if I gave formula at night, or else she wanted to cluster feed at night. So it could be worth a try. She never did sleep through though. My DS was formula fed after the first few weeks and never slept through ever.

shakeitoffsis · 04/01/2025 18:45

My formula fed babies slept through from 10 weeks. No experience of breast feeding.

You are being really rude and projecting your own issues. And I was asking a question out of interest before giving my own experience as I also combi fed. Take your unpleasentness somewhere else. My experiences of bottle feeding are just as relevant as yours.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/01/2025 18:45

The data says that BF babies sleep longer but wake up more in the might.

Which makes sense given what we know about BM.

But, I'd say any effect is going to be very small. DD slept utterly horribly, which my FF friend attributed to BFing and her being in the room with us. But turns out she has ADHD, and was always going to sleep poorly.

Both of mine were formula fed , one slept really well , the other one barely slept at all . So I’d say it makes no difference .

Same.
I exclusively bottle fed because SHOCK HORROR I wanted to 🤣🤣🤣 and DH wanted to feed too. Kiddo was a crap sleeper. Life was just too interesting to sleep.
