Hi,
FTM here.Baby is 7 weeks old.I was doing formula before but the last 3 weeks I am EBF.I am feeding baby on demand but was wondering what other mothers EBF on demand schedule is like?I know every baby is different but was wondering how often are you EBF during day and night? how many hours between feeds ? also how long are your babies sleeping during day and night? My baby fights sleep and only sleeps on arms during daytime getting her to sleep at night is also hardwork.there have been days where I am been up all night. My baby also does not feed for long. She only feeds on 1 breast for 5-10mins then her suckles/latch gets weak but will latch on forever. Never lets go of breast. I have to unlatch her.I keep swapping breast and her suckles/latch starts strong then gets weak again within 5 mins. Baby also has reflux. Brings up milk through nose and mouth.Any remedies for reflux ? Or will she grow out of it as she gets older? She is now doing one big dirty nappy once a day but her wet nappies aren’t that heavy? I check her nappy every few hrs and there is always blue line but not heavy.how often are you changing wet nappy?

Nanny Louenna has routines for every stage of feeding. I am currently on routine 2 and got to say having an idea about how long feeds and naps should be and when is a massive game changer. I am less tired and can plan my day around when DC is awake/asleep.

Go on the kelly mom website or speak to La Leche League. I didn't do a routine with mine just fed them when hungry, kept upright and winded for a while after, then laid them down to sleep. In the newborn stage it felt like I was breastfeeding 247 but it settled down and they eventually go longer between feeds.

Never did a routine with both babies. Just breastfed when they needed it. When they cried, when my boobs felt full. Offered it when I felt it had been a while since last feed. Never looked at the clock. Felt so happy and relaxed!!
perosnally I think feeding routines are for bottle feeders and even then if I had to bottle feed I think I would just feed on demand

At 7 weeks for us there was no routine.

We also did (do) demand led feeding. Some days feeds were approx 20mins or 10 or 50. Most common a mix, with longer feeds in evening. Usually 2-3hrs between day feeds and 3-4 overnight. I use the huckleberry app and it tells me I was feeding for over 3hrs a day in total.

My only real routine was block feeding in the am feeding from both sides in the afternoon as I had a very strong fast letdown in the morning so baby never wanted 2 boobs

Agree. Bottle feeding pumped breast milk and a routine with feeding a baby feels counterintuitive. Surely the baby should be fed when they are hungry?

No routine

Oh and if she can't maintain a latch have you had tongue tie checked? Mine had a small one and that was out main symptom. As she got tired her latch slipped. Even having a small one corrected has made a huge difference to her feeding

My little one seemed to struggle with the day time feeding at 7 weeks and was quite unsettled if not in the carrier, probably fed 12-14 times in 24 hours but only 5 min feeds in the day before would start crying, slow weight gain too but seemed to feed a lot better at night so encouraged more feeding then and weight gain much improved. Now 5 months and very happy baby, still EBF and but now feeding about 2.5-3 hourly (up to 3-6 hourly at night) happy to be put down in chair or on mat so spending the first 3 months mainly on carrier (obviously safely as per TICKS) gave her the comfort she needed at the time but didn’t at all make her dependant on it. To add, we use the huckleberry app for scheduling naps which seems to work quite well

There wasn't ever a routine. Just fed whenever he wanted it.

Another one with no routine. I EBF entirely on demand with my first until she weaned onto solids at 6 months and am aiming for that now with my second. What I noticed was that DD initiated something that felt like a routine in that as she aged feeds became somewhat more predictable, both in terms of length and frequency. If EBF at only 7 weeks I’d just watch out for cues, and if you’ve got a sleepy one that’s otherwise maintaining weight, make sure you keep an eye on the clock so that no more than 3 hours passes without nursing. The most important thing is to get baby well fed, and a well-fed baby is more likely to sleep.

Get an appointment with a lactation consultant to check baby’s latch and assess for tongue tie, if you can. Or find out where your nearest breastfeeding support group is for help. Miracles can happen with support! It might solve the issues with reflux but I’d be asking your Health Visitor about that.

Also, if you’re not sure, definitely find out where your nearest weigh-in clinic is and pop there every fortnight to make sure baby is following their curve nicely!

I think you get a bit of a routine once they start to tell night from day (around eight weeks). They they often have a slightly longer first period of sleep at the start of the night. But they will still surprise you by wanting to feed unexpectedly - might be hunger, might just want comfort.

At this point, they will often nap anywhere - I took my then eight week old to baby cinema and she slept through two hours of a two and a half hour film! Too young to get bored; unsettled for any reason, just fed them...
