Walk or drive to school?

I'm in the process of deciding which primary school I want my son to attend but I'm struggling and wondered what others opinions might be.
He currently attends a nursery we walk / ride to and we both love walking / riding there and back.

My conundrum is that we would have to drive to our preferred school.

Would you prioritise walking to school and making friends in the village or driving to a preferred school?

Could you drive partway and walk the rest?

Why is the other school your preferred school?

If all things are similar then I'd say the school you can walk to. Do not underestimate just how stressful it can be getting a spot even remotely close to a school at pick up and drop off times.

How far is the drive? At primary, if the distance is quite far, the bigger risk is that you fall out of the options for ad hoc play dates, trips to the park etc. But I'm not sure that overall I'd take driving as a reason NOT to go to a school I love.

DDs attended 5 Primary schools. One we cycled/walk,one was a school bus, one a school taxi, one a drive, and one a very short walk.

The driving was the most stressful. I never knew whether it would take 7 minutes or 40 minutes... the worst day was leaving home at 8.25, and getting home at 10am! There was the parking issue. DDs could never have got there independently.

Obviously a lot of drives aren't as bad as that, but it was the lack of control that made it stressful.

Whether it is worth it will depend on the school.

We moved from a walkable school to a driveable one. The walk was always preferable.

Prioritise the school vs the transport.
Chances are your work hours will mean you need to complete the school run asap anyway.

Always walk. Driving is so annoying and stressful and unpredictable and you can never park anywhere near the school.

JimHalpertsWife · 02/01/2025 16:38

What is better about the preferred school? And what is worse about the walkable one?

Walking and local friendships are massive positives.

I always walked to school whenever possible - the driving and parking was horrendous. You also have to think about the proximity of school friends and independence when your child is in year5/6. I 'trained' my ds from when my eldest started preschool into road safety, crossing the road, etc so by the time they were in the summer of year 5 I was confident that they could walk to and from school independently.

However if our 'walkable' school had been terrible I would have chosen the school that was 'best' for my child.

Walking and local friends gets my vote..This is how my ds made all his friends (and I made a few myself). They're all teens now and still good friends. All still local so I don't even have to give lifts! Plus the benefits of walking obviously. Was also very handy if someone was ill or had a sick younger child, we would all take help each other out getting them to/from school.
