Pramsuit or jacket for UK weather

BabyChoc879 · 02/01/2025 13:52

My DH is from the UK and we are travelling there (Gloucestershire) in early March with our 6 month old. We live in a warm country and I haven't been to the UK except for holidays. Should I buy a very thick pramsuit or just a jacket? Early March can be very cold I understand but all the pramsuits I am seeing online are very thick, they look better suited to snow? Is a pramsuit overkill?

I am ordering clothes from Next online to my in laws' house, to have ready for us.

Any other tips on what a 6 month old needs, appreciated. My main concern is normally about overheating!

OP if you are currently living somewhere where you buy children's clothes by height rather than age, take care with Next. My little boy usually needs the next age group since he's a bit taller (so currently wearing 3-4yrs although he's just over 2yrs old. Next also lists sizes by height, so do double check before, especially on anything with feet! Better to be a bit bigger!

@Batbatbatty oooh that's a good tip, thank you! There is nowhere for me to buy winter clothes here so I am relying solely on online shopping from the UK, which my in laws will bring over in a few weeks.

Day to day we used a thick coat (just covering the top half) and the cosytoes of the pram, this is much easier to take off in shops, cafés and other indoor spaces. The snowsuit only came out when we used the sling or would be outside for a long time. We used snowsuit more once they were walking so not in the pram as much. Still only more outdoorsy trips though not going round the shops.

You must remove coats and snowsuits or puffy jackets when they are in their car seat as the coat compresses in an accident meaning the straps won't be tight enough to contain the child in the seat. Cars heat up quickly but if you want to add warmth put the coat over the straps like a blanket or keep and blanket in the car.

Get a tuppence and crumble star wrap, super versatile and easy to get on and off!

I remember having to do this! Bringing babies born in Aus to the UK on visits.

I’d get a coat. You can tuck them in a pram or car seat with blankets, but their top half is warm.

My kids never wore a pramsuit, you won't need one in March. Jacket and blankets will be fine.

I would second this. Extremely useful additional layer that can easily be taken on and off (no buttons etc). I would also size up with Next baby. Same if you buy anything from John Lewis.

If its just for short trip consider buying second hand (eg on Vinted) so if you don't use it much it doesn't matter.

What you need depends a bit on what you plan on doing and whether you are using the pram or a carrier. At that age I preferred the pram footmuff. I had one that could be tucked up around their chest so they could wear indoors clothes under it and when we went inside I could just unzip it. Super handy if switching between indoors and outdoors when they might be asleep as I wouldn't want to leave them sleeping in a warm coat or pramsuit in a warm cafe.

Also loved the star wrap which might be perfect for that time of year as they are not too thick and you can still put blankets on top if needed.

I was going to suggest this too. So much easier.
