You tube cold turkey-advice!

Hi, just deleted you tube from tv as my 4 year old was getting too keen on it. She liked all the you tube kid families like Vania Mania, Diana and Like Nastya.
Does anyone have any recommendations for anything that’s colourful kids shows but with better ‘plots’ and less brain rot on other channels, or anything princess unicorns or generally good and non scary please? Thanks

Surely you don't want to replace one screen addiction with another?

You need to try and get something else for your 4 year old to focus on. What are her interests?

I don’t mind her watching some tv and am happy for her to watch something we its done similarities eg a family of kids doing activities just not screechy girls trying on dresses and make up with one show that runs into the next etc.
she does plenty of other stuff (likes make believe, crafts mostly).

CBeebies is great.

Thanks- she’s been a bit unenthusiastic about CBeebies - maybe without the influence of you tube it’ll have a chance though

Bluey. Ive worked in an industry adjacent to kids tv and I think it’s one of the best tv shows for under 5s in living memory.

educational shows like Numberblocks

but more generally- you’ve realised YouTube is a problem- please stick with this mentality- including as your child gets older. YT and TikTok are so harmful to developing brains it’s untrue.

Thanks for this-it just slipped in so gradually and we were going through new baby, moving area. But yes definitely sticking with this mentality. I think you tube is the kids version of adults being stuck on their phones, wrecking concentration.

I love Bluey so will suggest that if the tv is going on.

Also, watch with her and talk about the shows to build enthusiasm for a new selection of things. And CBBC can be good if CBeebies feels too young.

TTCJJB · 01/01/2025 22:26

How about a yoto or tonight box?

Kaleidoscopic101 · 01/01/2025 22:28

Haha great move I just did the same thing and deleted it from the TV. Perhaps True Rainbow Kingdom?

ScaryM0nster · 01/01/2025 22:31

Anything on CBeebies is pretty reasonable.

Number blocks, Bluey, Alphablocks.

For some reason number blocks seems to tick almost as many boxes as YouTube.

Or Justin’s House. Makes me want to poke my eyes out, but it’s garish so might scratch that itch.

tiggergoesbounce · 01/01/2025 22:35

Great job stopping YouTube, it is really not good for kids.

If you want to replace with something TV, maybe CBBC, number blocks and bluey is great for any age .

I totally love Bluey! 💙

And so do my two primary aged kids!

MassiveSalad22 · 02/01/2025 20:34

Most of CBeebies

My 2 year old loves Morph, weirdly, and old Pingu. And Shaun the Sheep but they all seem to love that. She’s a stop-motion fan!

Curious George

Stinky & Dirty

I’ll try and think of more!

FWIW my now 7 year old was addicted to YouTube, went cold turkey around 4 too. He’s totally fine, very creative, working above target across all subjects at school, kind friendly boy. Don’t worry too much, but definitely good idea to nix the YouTube as it’s so easy to get onto inappropriate stuff (even on the kids app), it’s really the worst screen time option there is IMO.

Autocorrect for Tonie box I reckon. Yoto better so you’re sorted OP!
