NYE Plans having to be cancelled.. what shall we do for dinner?

DS 2.5 has been throwing up (both ends) all night. Just wants to sleep today and watch tv with dad.

We were going out for dinner then to a friends for drinks. Obviously that's been cancelled. Fine with me really. Never keen on NYE.

Question.. what shall we do for dinner?! Just about to head to the shops but open to takeaway ideas too. Will really just be me and DH as DS isn't really eating obviously.

I'm just stumped on a nice dinner idea for us...

Just get some nice deli bits, party food, salad and have a picky tea. No hassle and you can eat what you like

Filled pasta , a yummy sauce and a garlic / garlic cheese flat bread. Chocolate pots for later ( M & S )

We are having baked camembert with dippy things, homemade sausage rolls, beige freezer food, and rhubarb crumble and custard.
Eclectic but delicious

Oh and probably more 🧀 later

Steak, chips and big mushrooms filled with blue cheese if you want a proper meal, otherwise as others have said, a selection of deli foods/picky bits - cured meats, cheeses, tiger bread, baked Camembert, olives, dips etc.
DH and I had a good NYE last year with just the two of us where we cooked different tapas type dishes together throughout the evening which was tasty and enjoyable.
Obviously a nice bottle of wine, dessert and a bottle of fizz for midnight too 😊

Supermarkets will have special deals on party food. A buffet of canape snacks is just what you need for binge-watching on the sofa.

M&S dine in for £15 type thing?

Or if you want to splash the cash a bit, Chinese takeaway?

DaveWatts · 31/12/2024 14:52

Go to M&S and buy all the reduced stuff - that's what we did earlier! Got a whole half price slow-cooked turkey (had beef for Xmas) plus a bunch of other stuff, prawn cocktails etc.

crumblingschools · 31/12/2024 14:53

Is it likely you will end up with D&V too?

AwakeNotThruChoice · 31/12/2024 14:55

From experience… I would get food you can dip in and out of.
In case your meal is interrupted with sorting DC out (poor thing)

So on this occasion I wouldn’t go All Out cooking something amazing that could end up being eaten cold. Or overcooked!

onwardandupwards · 31/12/2024 14:57

I went to lidl and got lots of reduced bits including a quiche for 39p, garlic pizza bread for 28p, pasta sauce for 40p ect, they had lots of lovely reduced bits and it was very quiet in there.

minisoksmakehardwork · 31/12/2024 14:57

I wouldn't go for takeaway as they'll likely be busy all evening. We're doing homemade pizzas. Dough made in bread maker and customised toppings.

ChimpiestoftheChimps · 31/12/2024 15:09

Have you got a Cook nearby?! Their Thai takeaway stuff is delicious. Recommend the massaman and chicken satay! (and then I make my own coconut rice).

Thanks guys - some awesome suggestions!

The shops had nothing too interesting so we have settled on a take away (TBC which one)

BUT I did get a good deal on a leg of lamb which we will have tomorrow.

DS is fast asleep. Not eaten at all 😞 hopefully it passes soon for him.

No signs if illness for us yet ... fingers crossed
