Nursery early closing NYE!

OneCoralFinch · 31/12/2024 08:47

Just venting. DH has taken DC to nursery today, we’re both working as normal. Nursery is usually open till 6, DH finishes 5:30, me at 6. Nursery worker casually drops into the conversation at drop off that they’re hoping to close at 4 today. No warning or communication about this at all from the nursery in the lead up to NYE. So now DH has to see if there’s a way of finishing 2 hours early to pick up DS. Not easy as loads of colleagues are taking holidays, my colleagues too so we’re thin on the ground. I get the nursery wanting to get away earlier but surely they need to give proper notice of their plans and not just leave it till the bloody morning to tell parents? They asked us to let them know before Christmas which days we were sending the kids in so they could work out staffing numbers but never mentioned anything about closing earlier

Ring and clarify if they are closing at 4 or if they’re hoping to close at 4 - they are not the same thing…

Wolfpa · 31/12/2024 08:49

they are trying it on, at a minimum they should have given you notice about the change in hours.

DustyLee123 · 31/12/2024 08:49

yrs, hoping to close and actually closing are two different things. They are just trying it on. If you’re paying for a full day, you should get a full day.

They said they are hoping to close not that they were closing. Ring and clarify that you've definitely not missed some communication that they are only open until 4 and if not go about your day as normal.

BarbaraHoward · 31/12/2024 08:50

Ring the manager and check what's that. I'm guessing the staff member was chancing her arm.

BreakfastClubBlues · 31/12/2024 08:51

That means if the children are all gone they will close early.

Whyherewego · 31/12/2024 08:51

I agree with PP, it's a hope. Not an official closing!

Supermonstermaniac · 31/12/2024 08:52

Wow your nursery is open! Poor staff.

I have worked in so many nurseries and they at least shut for the week between Christmas and new year.

Pandasnacks · 31/12/2024 08:52

You are over reacting. They are hoping to close if everyone goes early, they are not ‘closing early with no notice’. Work as normal and pick up as normal

Thankfully not all nursery’s do or so many more parents would struggle, people don’t stop getting sick and shops and bars don’t close so childcare is still needed on normal working days.

Pineapplewaves · 31/12/2024 09:01

"Hoping to close" sounds like they would like as many children picked up early as possible so some staff can get away early/they can lock up on time. I'm sure there will be some staff not going out tonight who will be happy to stay on until 6 pm. I would give them a quick call to confirm it's okay to pick up at your normal time.

If everyone picks up at the normal time, they will learn their lesson for next year and give proper notice.

Candleabra · 31/12/2024 09:02

They were just putting the feelers out to see if you could pick up early. Which you can’t. So don’t worry about it. They’ll send some staff home early if the nursery has only a few kids, but they’ll stay open til the end if those are the agreed hours,

It’s a normal working day. I was at work 27th 30th and 31st as are many people .

Ladybyrd · 31/12/2024 09:05

I would speak to the nursery manager to clarify why you weren't told this earlier and seek assurances it won't happen again. We can't all take time out so they can finish early.

Moonwalkies · 31/12/2024 09:05

It sounds like they're hoping to close, personally I'd try and pick up for 4 if I could, if not though just collect at normal time.

Quite.

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/12/2024 09:16

Closing and hoping to close are very different, the staff member you spoke to is chancing it

our nursery is closed between xmas and new year however I know plenty of people that have to work, especially those working in healthcare, so i imagine it’s vital that some stay open

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 31/12/2024 09:17

As others have said they're wanting to finish at 4pm. They expect most parents using childcare today either aren't working anyway, or are likely to have a quiet day themselves and could finish early.

They forget that people have jobs where they can't just leave early. You can't finish early. Your DH should have made this clear. So pick up at normal time. As a courtesy i'd let them know you can't pick up until x time, so they can manage staff expectations. If they kick off ask them where it was communicated in writing that they close at 4pm on NYE and ask how they are refunding the 2 hours fees you've paid. I bet it wasn't.

You pay for them to be there until 6pm so they can hardly complain. People saying poor staff are probably the same people going shopping/out to eat/calling the doctor. People have to work. New years eve isn't even a bank holiday! It's not even really a celebration to most people.

Eldermillennial2024 · 31/12/2024 09:20

Yes telling you same day is not enough. Call them and let us know!

Haveabreakkitkat · 31/12/2024 09:20

They will have less kids in today, staff member probably mentioned it in conversation about it being new years because if all the children end up gone early they will close early. I don't think she was being rude or chancing anything it sounds like it just came up in conversation.

Ellie1015 · 31/12/2024 09:22

Doesnt sound like it is closing at 4pm just that they will let staff go if they can. Expect it was just mentioned so those who were available to pick up early could.

mindutopia · 31/12/2024 09:24

I’m not sure I’d even acknowledge it. They are contracted to provide care until 6pm when you normally pick up and haven’t notified you they are closing early. At most, I might send an email saying that ‘Sarah mentioned you were hoping to close at 4pm today. Just reminding you that Bob and I work until normal time so will not be collecting until 6pm. Hope you all had a lovely Christmas.’ That’s all you need to do. Don’t negotiate.

PokerFriedDips · 31/12/2024 09:24

They are contractually obliged to provide care to their normal hours unless they gave you reasonable notice of closure. The staff member was trying it on. Email the manager confirming that this is a normal working day for you and DH and you are not able to rearrange your working hours at zero notice to facilitate their staff's social lives.

hockityponktas · 31/12/2024 09:24

They will be mentioning it on the off chance that you are also finishing early.
They may have been given the heads up by the few parents whose children are in today that they will be picking up early meaning your child may be the only one there.
if you can, pick up early- if you can’t, don’t.
I would hate to think of my child being the only one left though and would call them to clarify what’s happening.
