Pram costs- what’s reasonable

I have offered to buy my daughter and son in law a pram for their baby. I bought pram for my older daughter and cot and furniture to a similar value for my son and his wife. My budget is £1000, which I thought was generous. She’s come back saying she wants a particular one at £1800, which quite frankly I think is ridiculous ! I’d appreciate thoughts/ maybe I’m out of touch !

Mine cost about £300. Granted that was 10 years ago, but people were still spending £1000 back then (which I thought was bonkers, tbh). What’s reasonable is what you are willing to contribute.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 30/12/2024 18:42

Tell her your budget - as with her siblings - is £1000. If she wishes to add to this for her dream pram, then that is her choice.

Superfrog3 · 30/12/2024 18:42

I'm guessing she is buying a whole travel system, if you have already said a budget I would offer to pay towards maybe if that's the one she wants. My first system which did my 2 eldest children was around £1000 with my youngest I found the pushchair/ carrycot for £500 and then car seat an extra £200- £300. Both the travel systems were decent well known brands and actually my kids used them till they were 3 and didn't need a pushchair 🙂

Just say that you can afford up to £1000 so they can add the other £800 to that amount. £1800 is utterly ridiculous for a pram when someone else is paying, and it's a choice for her to want such an expensive one rather than a necessity.

TickingAlongNicely · 30/12/2024 18:46

Offer your budget towards it if they want something more expensive... or the option of chosong something cheaper and having money left over towards the car seat or furniture or a bouncer etc

LittleRedRidingHoody · 30/12/2024 18:47

Offer to pay that towards it.

I wouldn't be saying over £1k is ridiculous though if she's got her heart set on something - especially with pregnancy hormones at play 😂 I paid about that on my travel system 5 years ago and there were pricier options in John Lewis at the time.

Nc546888 · 30/12/2024 18:48

ours Was £1250 about 4 years ago. I think other PP right, contribute £1k and they can top it up to whatever pram they really want

Parker231 · 30/12/2024 18:49

She’ll get much better value from a second hand one - some are hardly used.

MissRachelismycoparent · 30/12/2024 18:49

Just offer £1000 and they can top it off. I did pay £1200 for the whole travel system but it did serve us well. A good 3 years

jenevivech · 30/12/2024 18:50

That's very cheeky of her, if she wants one for 1800 that would be fine but she should have effusively thanked you and mentioned in passing that she'll be topping it up, not expecting you to pay almost double what is already a very generous offer. My travel system 3 years ago was £800 and I thought that was steep

ThejoyofNC · 30/12/2024 18:53

Just tell her your budget is £1000 so she can have that towards the pram.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 30/12/2024 18:54

I really don't think the daughter is at fault here, unless you communicated the budget and she's demanding more. She's entitled to want the pram she wants, not a cheaper or second hand one. You can offer a smaller percentage if it doesn't fit your budget, and she can top up the rest (presumably what she planned to do before you offered).

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 30/12/2024 18:57

£1800 is ridiculous! I think my first car wasn't even half that. We bought second hand one for £120 on ebay, which turned out to be a dud, but then spent £60 on a Facebook marketplace one that I had a better look at and that has been amazing, an absolute bargain, uppababy vista in immaculate condition. That 2nd pram has seen us through 2 kids, currently sitting on the spare room as ours are 6 and just turned 3 so we've only just finished using it

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 30/12/2024 18:59

Should've said, I'd offer the 1k you can afford and let them top up if they want to

DAndreBarksdale · 30/12/2024 19:02

I remember mine was £1000 six years ago. Beautiful Silvercross special edition- that every other mum at baby massage also had!

knackeredknCkered · 30/12/2024 19:04

Why do people spend such a crazy amount of money on a pram ! From my own experience the pram was used for such a short amount of time and swapped for a light weight buggy within 6 months! My third child who was a January baby went straight into a lie back buggy, with cosy toes and it was used every day for 2 years …cost about £200 !

Gollldddstar · 30/12/2024 19:06

We bought a travel system around 6m ago. Your 1K budget gets you some FANTASTIC travel systems. I'd stick to that. Anything else is excessive. They can put towards if they're that bothered.

flowergirl2020 · 30/12/2024 19:09

I'd just state £1000 is your budget and they can add to that if they wish. Our pram/travel system bought late 2021 for a 2022 baby cost about £1200/1300 . That was including the isofix, car seat etc for a Bugaboo Fox.
Some people think 1000 plus is madness but it depends what your wanting... we needed something to handle rougher terrain as have two dogs. It's been bounced round everywhere including secluded beaches. Still use it now at almost 3 years old.

Favouritefruits · 30/12/2024 19:22

Just give her cash in a card ‘for whatever you want for the baby’ that way there’s no debate over money, siblings get the same amount and if she wants to add to it she can. £1800 is ridiculous

Pinkstuffs · 30/12/2024 19:27

My travel system was £1k exactly 1 year ago, it’s a perfectly decent Mamas and Papas pram and we got the car seat and isofix included. I tried out a Bugaboo which was nice but it was about £1.8k for the travel system equivalent. My MIL at the time gave us £1k.

I use the pram almost every day so it’s not been a waste of money at all. We used the carrycot for 5 months and now use the pushchair seat. I also use the car seat every day. If we had bought a cheaper secondhand pram we would have needed to fork out for a new car seat which would have been £400 inc the isofix, so the travel system wasn’t a bad deal really.

ChefBingo · 30/12/2024 19:35

We spent £1100 on an uppababy with a load of accessories bundled in but bought our car seat separately. A lot of the car seats included with travel systems don't provide the best fit so might be worth thinking about, especially if there's a chance baby might be small.

I agree with everyone that has said that she can top up your very generous budget of needs be.

horchatatresleches · 30/12/2024 19:42

Is that quite a significant bundle she's looking at? One of the most expensive prams on the market is the Cybex e-Priam, which is so expensive because it's electronically assisted, and that's under her figure with the carrycot added. Did you tell her you were willing to spend the £1000 you spent on her siblings and she's welcome to cover the difference?

I'd say £1000 is very generous and would buy a range of good quality prams. If she wants something fancier she can top up with her own money.

mitogoshigg · 30/12/2024 19:50

Why??? Honestly it's not worth that much, give her your budget and she might see sense

Mrbay · 30/12/2024 20:06

My mil offered to buy our pram once we'd chosen it but I couldn't bring myself to spend her cash on a brand new system (around £1.5k I think). Picked up the same one pretty much unused for £500!

It's worth noting that a lot of the travel systems come with a really poorly designed car seat.

Give them the £1k cash if you can afford too and let them spend it on what they like.

Trust me when you get past the first few weeks of baby, you wonder why you spent so much money on baby stuff!
