19 month old - fever for 5 days

My 19 month old DD is on day 5 of a fever. Spiking at 40. Calpol doesn't bring it down at all. Ibuprofen lowers it to 38 for a few hours before it spikes again.

Took her to a&e today after 111 advised us to. They checked her ears and throat. Told her throat looks red, probably viral. Sent on our way and told to come back in 2 days if temp still high. They didn't check urine.

She seems in ok spirits. When it's been a while since she last had medicine she gets quite lethargic. She's irritable. But she's still laughing, smiling and playing.

She's not eating much which isn't surprising if her throat is sore. She's eating lots of yoghurt though.

I can't help but still worry. I thought if a temp lasted more than 5 days then further investigations necessary.

Any reassurance greatly received.

Hi Op. sorry to hear your little one is still spiking the fever, it’s so worrying when they don’t seem to be improving. Obviously I’m not a trained medical professional but did have lots of experience of viral and bacterial tonsillitis with my DS between the ages of 5 and 17 months (he had his tonsils out at 17 months). We definitely found the fever could last 4/5, sometimes even 6 days sometimes. What we were told by the hospital though was that we should notice the peak starts to get lower, or you should notice longer gaps between the peaks.

So as nasty as it is to watch, and awful to see them struggle, it can be normal. Definitely take their advice and go back though if you don’t see any improvement at all, it’s what they are there for and I did it many times!

Thanks so much, this is really helpful and reassuring. We did notice that he went longer between peaks today so things are looking up a bit. It's going to be yet another long night for us all I think.
