How old should baby be before going into this pram? (Photo)

My baby is 3.5 months old and is starting to enjoy sitting in his bouncer and high chair and looking out on the world.

I know he should be in his bassinet until six months, and I wouldn’t put him in the ‘seat’ style pram until then. But at what age could he go into it with the seat reclined like this?

Is that the Cosatto Wow Continental? If so, it's suitable from birth even without the bassinet. The seat lays fully flat and there's a newborn insert.

It’s the Wow 2… we didn’t get a newborn insert for this section… the fact it fully reclines makes me think it would be okay, but then the fact it isn’t lie flat makes me think it’s not okay at this age?

I expect there should be a newborn insert.

Just googled, the chassis (not the basinet) is suitable from six months unfortunately.

craigth162 · 29/12/2024 13:47

Product website says 6 months

Why he is in his high chair, even reclined that’s not a good idea. A baby should be flat with 30 minutes max in a bouncer a couple of times a day,

Both my children have been in the seat for a similar pram (Uppababy Vista) fairly reclined by 4 months, short durations only. They were hating lying flat not being able to see by then, constantly craning their necks up, getting grumpy. Ater I spent one trip out having to hold eldest baby sitting up leaning against the bassinet wall trying to push with the other hand, I thought this is surely less safe and supportive than the proper seat reclined. I know you can get a newborn insert but I decided against it for the couple of months use it would have.
However I agree with @DragonFly98 , a 3.5 month old baby shouldn't be in a highchair at all, not until they can sit unaided which will be 5-6 months. A reclined buggy seat with straps and footrest angled to allow legs flat is different to a full on sitting position.

Don’t worry all! It’s a high chair with a newborn insert! Only used for the first time on Christmas Day, very reclined, footrest came up to flat, all okay 👍🏻

And thanks all - will hold off the pushchair for a while longer… I’m not sure he’ll make six months though..!

Check the US instructions, a lot of them say 3 months when ours say 6. I also used a similar seat from about 4 months without issue, the baby was much happier on a slight incline.

What’s the actual point of a newborn high chair?

What’s the actual point of a newborn high chair?

In our case, it was a godsend as it meant I could eat my dinner with two hands for the first time since he was born!

(He’s a velcro baby so naps in our arms / is always held / won’t go down in a crib to sleep or for naps etc.) So it was fantastic.

I’d never actually heard of high chairs with newborn inserts, since a couple of days before Christmas, but it was worth every penny!

I would use that type pram seat from now if he looks comfortable enough in it.

We tried to use the bassinet for 6 months, but by 4 months Ds could already sit up! So his mountain buggy bassinet converted to a parent facing seat like in your picture and he was in that by 4.5month latest as the bassinet had no harness so it was no longer safe

He was also sitting in normal baby seat on Tripp trapp high chair around same time at 4.5months. He could easily sit there comfortably and play with toys at the table whilst we ate.

Why is that?

I think its because of breathing. Same as only being in the carseat for very short periods. Their bodies aren't strong enough to support their weight upright and it can compress lungs and airway which can reduce oxygen levels. Worse case is they fall asleep and head flops and their windpipe is compressed completely. That's why they advise bouncers are not for sleeping and babies should be supervised at all times in them. Same with pram seats.

I've also heard that it can affect their spine if sitting up too early as again their weight isn't supposed to go through their spine that way too early.

gereks · 29/12/2024 15:14

I wouldn't put a baby in a seat like that until 6m. There are pushchairs which recline fully which can be used safely from birth. If baby wants to look around, you can use a carrier - we used ours most of the time anyway until 12m as it was more convenient and they are light enough to carry at that age.

MarioLink · 29/12/2024 15:41

As it looks like a bucket shaped seat rather than fully lie-flat one I'd stick to 6 months.
