Toddler crying hard at night

So my toddler is 2 and this has been his first 'proper' Christmas. Since that day he's been screaming howling and crying before bed- totally inconsolable tantrum style to get access to a couple of new toys he got. (These are two massive plastic noisy contraptions that cannot go in his cot with him).

He's even started waking up in the middle of the night very distressed asking to play with them. I know he's really tired and is ready to sleep, and when he's settled eventually he will go over and if he wakes upset he will go back to sleep and then sleep through but it's a horrible 20 minutes or so of just inconsolable screaming- won't be held, won't be set down. It was so bad the first night I was ready to ring the doctor incase he was in pain.

I'm trying to figure out if the toys he's playing with are overstimulating (I tend to get wooden or open play style toys so he doesn't have that much plastic noisy flashy stuff because I just don't have the space for many toys in the first place.) Or is the sudden influx of a stupid amount of toys just overwhelming for him?

Do I take the main culprits away? Do I just push through? I don't know what to do for the best but it is awful to watch and not be able to console him.

Yes I would take them away, hopefully he will forget about them quite quickly! We also avoid massive noisy things as they have the same effect on our LO too!

Thanks it's good to know it's not just him. He's taken so much to two particular gifts he got and he'd play with them flat out during the day if I let him but even today he's not had that much time with them as we were out and about a lot so I'd hoped that would have broken it up enough to let him relax about them.
