I've reluctantly got my 10yo a phone for Xmas. Shes sensible tho, and part of the deal is i check it on a regular basis. What's everyone's opinions on family link, and/or setting up a Samsung account? I'm not sure I like the idea of putting dob info , or am I just being over cautious???

I mean tbh I would take it right back off her, it’s a recipe for disaster on so many levels but if you aren’t willing to do that then I would say no social media or chat apps, lock down the internet and check it daily, have limits of how long she can be on it each day and only downstairs, not in her room and talk to her regularly and candidly about the dangers of the internet/online porn/ stranger danger/ phone addition etc sad that these are conversations you have to have with a ten year old but unfortunately the reality when they get a phone

I mean tbh you've not actually answered my question so why bother replying.

I have answered, you asked if and how you should be monitoring, I’ve offered an opinion on that and also agreed that no you are not being over cautious

We find that family link has worked well for us. They have to have all app downloads authorised and we can set an overall time limit, wake up and bed time for the phone and time limits on individual apps.

My youngest has access to class charts for school, WhatsApp (which I check regularly) plus a few games. Total time limit on phone is 1.5hrs and it turns off at 8pm so no bring bothered by any of the nighttime nonsense.

Family link will give the option to the child to remove it at age 13 which is way too young but as a parent you get notified if they do that and do for my dc keeping it on is a condition of having a phone. They can remove it after their GCSEs.

Unless you got her this, you're asking for trouble.
A 10 year old doesn't need apps, access to social media or the internet apart from homework which can be done at home supervised by a parent with a laptop/PC.

Thank you for a sensible reply. I've stuck with family link over the samsung account. I don't know enough about samsung account, and as you say the settings and visibility/accessibility are ideal. I agree, 13 is still to young to be turning it off, she'll be having it on for much longer. We too have rules for having tech. Any nonsense and it's gone.

Who said she has any of that? Take your unasked for opinion elsewhere.

I asked about family link and samsung account. You appear to have no knowledge of either.

@Winginit14 you appear to have no manners, I hope you’re instilling them in your children or the mobile at ten will be the least of your problems ☺️

@Boardingschoolmumoftwo I have manners in abundance thank you. What I dont have is patience for this BS. You sound like a right bundle of laughs with your recipe for disaster opinion. That's the only problem with these threads, you ask a question and over opinionated people jump in with comments you didn't ask for or are of any use.
