Baking kit for party bag

DC is having a party later in the month and I was trying to think of items that are not just tat. I was thinking of doing home baking kits so they could make cookies in their own time. I bake a lot with DC and they love it, but DH thinks it’s not a good idea, not that he has any alternative ideas.

if you recieved this would you be please it’s something different to do with DC or annoyed that you had to make cookies and clean up after them

I’ve got a radical suggestion. Why not bin off the idea of party bags! Kids parties are expensive, lots of parents cant afford them, and they seem to be yet another way of encouraging parents to outdo each other. We should be happy for our child to be invited to a party in the local church hall, with party games, someone playing music to dance to, sandwiches, crisps, biscuits and pop for food then a big slice of cake and a balloon to take home. Instead it becomes an exercise in one-upmanship inviting the whole class, and paying £25 a head at some expensive venue with a £10 party bag to go home with.

Yes, sorry but I do think it’s sad that parents don’t want to spend the time or effort baking with their DCs if that’s what their DCs want to do. It’s not a particularly difficult or time consuming activity, and can do it in about 30 mins. If parents don’t have 30 mins to spend with their DCs then yes that’s sad.

Seriously stop, I baked once during COVID. That was enough for all of us. We live beside stunning bakers.

I spend hours upon hours doing activities that we enjoy. I know this may come as a surprise but different people like different things.

And the passive aggressive 'oh woe the child won't get to bake, sob". Yep we are all good thanks

If you used a cheap cake making box from a supermarket and cutters from Temu, then you ARE using unhealthy ingredients and cheap plastic tat!

Why flour, cocoa powder, and sugar is unhealthy for you as an ingredient for the cookie? Neded to add butter and egg at home, or they could swap the sugar for honey. There was nothing fake about it.
I also didn't order plastic cutters. The metal cutters will last and can be used for years. Just because something from Temu, it doesn't automatically means it's crap. The exact same ones can be bought on Amazon for an extra £10.

And BTW, parents sent me pictures baking with their children, the cookie they made, and said it was a lovely gift. Yes, you are right. They must hate the idea......

Bournetilly · 27/12/2024 19:26

I would love this but not sure how the children would feel and can imagine quite a few parents wouldn’t love this.

I think kids mostly care about sweets in party bags, maybe just go with sweet cones?

I would be interested in the reports of some of the chemicals used in the metal production for temu which haven't been legal in Ireland for decades.

Agree! I'm not from the UK or the US and this idea is strange to me.
Why would the children get a gift for attending? Free entertainment and food isn't enough?
I got used to it now and I do the same but refuse to buy cheap crap.

Judging by this thread, a Venn diagram of non-bakers and people with excessive rage about baking is a cookie circle.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 27/12/2024 19:53

Whilst I like baking, I am not sure I would want this.

Superscientist · 27/12/2024 19:58

My friend did this for a party. We have had the jar in the cupboard for 18 months. We make biscuits and cakes frequently but the mix given requires and egg and I don't have the time or energy to find modification to the recipe for the jar given to make it egg free so instead I stick to the recipes I know and trust.

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 20:04

DD1 would love this! We gave some all in one biscuit mixes with cutters to some of her friends as Christmas gifts. Hopefully their parents aren't too disgusted and appalled Grin

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 20:08

Oh and the Craft and Crumb kits are great but a little pricey if you have quite a few kids. DD1 is 6 in Feb and not sure what I'm going to do about party bags this year.

Yes, never mind the 15+ harmful ingredient from a shop bought sweets in one little cookie but keep wondering about the chemicals of the metal production. ... If you order from Amazon or Etsy, I hate to break it to you: they sell loads of Temu staff overpriced!

Which is why I buy Irish.

Now youre making things up 😂. Who in their right minds sends metal biscuit cutters to children?

Bustopnumberone · 27/12/2024 21:39

OP, clearly from the answers on this thread just do what you think is nice and don’t worry what the parents will think. Some will love it and some will not. Same as if you sent home a bag of plastic crap and sweets.

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 21:40

What's wrong with a metal biscuit cutter? Confused We have a children's baking subscription and they send a different metal cutter every month. We have a big bag of them!

Yes that’s a strange response… they’re cookie cutters not weapons! We’ve only ever had metal ones at home and my 2 year old can use them perfectly well (and obviously 6 year old too!)

I did say that hats wrong with metal cookie cutters? My 4 year old has been using them without any issues since she was 2, most children wouldn’t have a problem using them.
