18 month old bashed tooth back into gum

18mo DD tripped at the park this morning and bashed her two front teeth (which had only just erupted approx half way - late teether). Lots of crying and blood and I could tell straight away that one of the teeth had pushed back into the gum. Rushed her to the dentist who confirmed this and said now it’s just a case of waiting to see if the tooth comes back down and whether or not it turns grey/purple.

He said to give nurofen to help with the swelling around her lips/gums but nothing else. She seems absolutely fine in herself now but I’m wondering if anyone has experience of this? Should I be worried about infection etc? I didn’t think to ask the dentist this as I was a bit flustered to be honest.

My neighbour's daughter did similar at about 20 months. She fell down a long staircase and hit the wall near the bottom, where the staircase turned direction, in a full-on face plant. There were absolutely no problems at all. She pushed two (top) teeth back in but they both reappeared normally and grew again with no issues.

I actually think her mother suffered more! She's a nurse and has never lived down the fact that she managed to get her DD to the dentist and explain what had happened but then immediately fell into a dead faint 😂. So well done you for just being a bit flustered!

Thank you for replying. That is really reassuring and I’m so hoping it’s the same for my daughter. I spent months worrying about her lack of teeth and then this happens.

I mean I say I was a bit flustered, but I’ve actually spent all day crying on and off about it as I feel terrible 😫

@snowy37
Yes, it's definitely often worse for us mums than for the little ones. They bounce right back long before we get over the shock and stop feeling guilty about something we never had any control over anyway.

I hope you're meanwhile feeling a bit better. How is DD doing?

@Gulbekian sorry for slow reply, we were away over Christmas. Her gum healed over within a few days and it looks as though the tooth is now starting to cut again, so other than the usual teething symptoms she’s been absolutely fine thank you 😊
