Every single baby I know with reflux has had a dairy allergy and some have had other allergies too. It’s also something that doctors seem to be incredibly unbothered about. If you’re breastfeeding try cutting out dairy and if formula try a dairy free one - you can buy them online v easily.

Reflux medication is the only job for it. My son was just projectile vomiting up his feeds and it stunk of vinegar (which is a sign of stomach acid) losec sorted him out . He also had cmpa but even though he was on special formula for this it still didn't sort his reflux

BellaNutella88 · 15/12/2024 10:05

I had this with both mine but my second was a nightmare to feed. Hated having her milk. We started omeprazole and anti reflux formula at 6 weeks and although she is still sick even now at 7 months she takes her bottles (and food) really well now. She dropped percentiles and they told me when they drop to lines (that would have been 9 for us too) then it would be an issue so I’d ask your GP for a referral to the paediatrician.

it could be an allergy. Are there any other symptoms ? Skin issues, mucous in poo etc ? The only way to know with allergy is to change milk. Removing dairy from diet if BF or a hydrolysed or CMPA milk. It starts with aptimil pepti where the protein is broken down, then nutrimgen and then neocate has no milk protein in at all (think that’s right but I’m not an expert!). The problem is those milks are very thin so the sick will get worse. You can use a thickener such as carobel but it takes a bit of practice to get the amount right.

lastly if you use a thickener or anti reflux milk you need to change the teat to a bigger size so it can get through.

it really is trial and error with these reflux babies but given where you are now I’d be asking for an urgent paediatrics referral or ringing 111 about how much baby is taking.

in the short term we did feeds little and often. So the amount I was making up was much less than what was recommended for her age but I’d maybe only go 2 hours to the next feed. And I’m sure you know this but baby upright for feeding and keep upright for 30 minutes after a feed.

good luck and sending love. It’s rough but it’ll get better xx

Mine just had reflux, no allergies but he had to have medicine for a while

BellaNutella88 · 15/12/2024 10:10

Just wanted to add, in my experience our GP was quick to fob me off a lot and I had to push quite hard for what was needed. They’ll always want to start with gaviscon which is basically like a thickener and won’t want to give a PPI such as omeprazole. I had to be quite pushy about it which was happier to do the second time round.

@BellaNutella88 thanks so much for this advice hun
I’m sat here contemplating going to a&e right now. DS has not kept any feed down since yeastwrsah morning and only 2 wet nappies in the last 12 hours
I just don’t want to seem like an idiot for going in for something like this
but AIBU to think it is not normal for my son to projectile vomit every feed out?

Take him to a&e if he’s got reduced wet nappies and feeds.

Ask them for an allergy formula, he’s dropping weight and relfux are red flags for cows milk allergy . My DS was exactly the same .

Cocobellax · 15/12/2024 10:51

@ScoobyBooby when you started the allergy milk did you have to use Carobel?
I feel as though carobel in his milk made his vomiting worse weirdly and worried that his reflux on allergy milk will get worse.
im inclined to think it may be allergy as he has eczema on his face, is that something your DC had?

Go to a&e. You’ll also see a paediatrician quicker this way anyway. Never feel like you shouldn’t go when it comes to your baby. It’s better to be checked out and have wasted some time than not go and not know. Reflux in babies is common although it doesn’t mean it’s right but your babies reflux sounds very extreme ! eczema in addition does sound like an allergy but it doesn’t mean the reflux will stop so you will probably still need reflux meds.

Let us know how you get on xx

Imisscoffee2021 · 15/12/2024 11:13

I went to a&e with my 3 week old not knowing why he was either crying or sleeping, he had silent reflux so gained weight fine as he swallowed whatever cane up again, but it burned his throat so he was in pain. Was awful, they gave us omeprazole for him and it worked wonders but what changed everything was the health visitor finally realising based on his mucusy nappies at 6 weeks that he had a dairy allergy, he never had a rash etc but he has one and he was put on hydrolysed formula which was a prescription. He was like another child, much happier and now he's 16 months and long ago weaned off omeprazole and not eating dairy products it's like a bad dream all of that.

Don't let them fob you off with gavsicon alone if your little one is dropping centre's.

Imisscoffee2021 · 15/12/2024 11:14

Excema sounds like a diary allergy which isn't the end of the world, once you get the right formula (and this can be a journey too as they start you on one and there's a ladder if baby rejects it as they don't taste great, we had aptamil pepti then aptamil pepti syneo which my son accepted, didn't like the pepti)

Our baby had silent reflux. No allergies whatsoever. All good now. So in most cases maybe, not in our case though.

We didn’t use Carobel but he had Gaviscon for well over a year

He could be allergic to the Carobel . But the allergy milks are like water so most babies will need something added to it .

He’s been on Neocate since 8 weeks old , he gets an all over body rash , his eczema is awful as he’s got several allergies and is under dermatology and the allergy clinic .

I disagree with this. There are many, many,.many reasons for reflux. Mine was because he has a severe tongue tie which meant he wasn't able to swallow properly.
Get the help of a feeding consultant and find out why your baby has reflux, then treat that. Fwiw it is quite rare that the reflux is due to a dairy allergy via the mom's breastmilk.

Take him to A&E. Less than 3 wet nappies in 12 hours indicates the possibility of serious dehydration. Even if A+E is not the right place for them to investigate the wider cause of his vomiting, he may be dehydrated enough right now to become seriously ill if he isn't treated.

Cocobellax · 16/12/2024 11:43

Hi everyone quick update. Came to A&E and little one has been diagnosed with pyloric stenosis awaiting surgery he’s been nill by mouth for 15 hours now so really struggling to keep him settled. He is on fluids via IV but obv that doesn’t help him with the hunger.
just thought id update for anyone else who come across this thread - trust your gut and go to a&e if needed for answers.

I was surprised that no one mentioned that possibility earlier on the thread. I'm sure it's rare, but pretty well known.

I hope the surgery goes well.

Oh my gosh ! I’m so glad you went in, always trust your gut. This was mentioned to us as a possibility but it’s so rare it didn’t cross my mind. Hope little one has a quick recovery and you are all ok xx
