Do you throw away stained baby clothes if nappy leaks?

Hello, just been reading a discussion on another forum and was wondering, if you had a baby whos nappy kept leaking, would you throw the clothes away everytime? What if there was a bit of a stain?

Just interested?

Say no more, chloe, say no more!

I have thrown out stained clothing once the said child has grown out of the item.....and once or twice if I have been out and we have had an allergic poo come thro as believe me, those poo's are vile!!!!

I remember once having tho throw an entire outfit away as the explosion was so bad, but that was once, literally, out of all the five, so not bad IMHO.

sickness stains don't come out either, but again, they get chucked if horrendous but normally kept/washed and used until grown out of. mine were often sick/diarrhea'ry tho thro sickness (immune deficiancies with DD2 and DD3) and alleriges, so I would have thrown out hundreds of items had I thrown each time they were ill!!!

If its a popper vest with envelope neck you can take it down the way, over the hips and off (quite a cool trick that I saw the mw do with ds), but no I would not chuck it out, I'd wash and leave outside in the sun until the stain was gone.

Blimey - DS has had so many 'poo-throughs' that we'd be bankrupt if I kept throwing away and buying new vests/sleepsuits/sleeping bags! I just soak the offending item straight away and then use lots of stain remover. If all else fails, a really hot wash usually helps although not v eco-friendly.

Thomcat · 30/04/2008 21:48

I have thrown away the odd vest that was so covered it wasn't worth the effort to save an old vest she was nearly grown out of. But as a rule I try and save them by soaking with soda crystals or a bit of vanish.

I've never thrown away pooed-on clothing; so far none have ever been permanently stained after an escaped power poo. DD + offending vest get hosed down in the bath, then the wet clothing gets the stain remover treatment before going into the washing machine. Never needed an extra wash or anything.

Never knew about the sunlight bleaching Jacs008. Does it work on very old stains? I have a few 'inherited' items with faint yellow marks on them that don't respond to my usual treatment, so I think I'll give it a go.

DD is soooo much cleaner than ds in this respect that I'd forgotten what it's like to get a humdinger (emphasis on the 'hum') & have to strip ds off in the bath.

I've always managed to get vests clean apart from one very early one which contained meconium.

NoBiggy · 01/05/2008 22:42

Sunlight is nothing short of miraculous when it comes to poo stains.

But it can't touch those evil-looking black banana stains.

ravenAK · 01/05/2008 22:49

Rinse, nappy bucket. If still stained use for under other clothes in future. When outgrown, rag bag not passed on.

Only time I've chucked one was once when out for the day - couldn't face carrying it around (& it was a 3rd hand vest that had been poomageddoned)

FourPlusOne · 01/05/2008 23:00

Sunlight definitely works. Our nappies get a bit 'dingy' during the winter months when dried indoors, but whiten up again over the summer. If it is a really sunny day I always prioritise my white clothes wash to get a bit of sun bleaching on then (but then I am sad!)

geordieminx · 01/05/2008 23:01

have thrown away vests on occasion, but to be fair they are £1.50 for 3 in asda or tesco, so sometimes it really isnt worth the mess and hassle for 50p

FourPlusOne · 01/05/2008 23:02

Also, the sun bleaching is the reason I dry coloured clothes (especially black) inside out and white ones the right way round!

Vests pull down!!!

Mepmep · 13/04/2014 11:07

I was tempted to throw some particularly badly stained sleep suits (back in the newborn days), as I could not see how the stains could possibly come out. There was a time when DS had explosive bowel movements every night and sainted his sleep suits right up the back and into the legs!

But, my mum advised a dousing in stain remover, then a cold soak in more stain remover (the powder kind) and a normal wash with yet more stain remover in the powder drawer. We used liquid tabs for washing, vanish powder and stain remover but also some cheapo powder remover from Home Bargain. Result - we never threw anything away and DS's clothes have no stains.

Never thrown away poo covered baby stuff, just stick it in the nappy bucket, wash with nappies and hang in the sun. I did however recently throw away my 5 year old dd's pants and tights when she quite literally filled her tights with diarrhoea. Blush She did it at school, picked her up, felt the weight of the bagged clothes and decided the bin was the best place. thankfully they had bagged her skirt and coat separately, they got washed.

stargirl1701 · 13/04/2014 13:06

Never. We use cloth so we haven't dealt with poo leaks since the early days when DD was in disposables.

At that time, I would pop the clothes in with nappies - cold prewash. Then rewash with normal whites - 60 degrees and stain remover. Next they go out on the line.

I have never had a stain beat sunlight. It may take a few days but the sun always wins - even in the winter.

YY envelope vests pull down so no need to pull the poo bit over heads. Vital bit of knowledge everyone!!
