Hello,

We’re going to be flying back to the UK over Xmas and I wondered if anyone had any tips for a FTM flying with a baby? It’s her first flight and not too long only 3 and a half hours…

Thank you!

Just adjust your expectations. No inflight drinking or relaxing into a movie. You'll be focussed on baby. My youngest needed to be sucking on take off and landing - small little ear tubes didn't like the pressure changes.

Tough age as they’re mobile, too young for screens but have a short attention span. Keep your expectations low and hopefully you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Feed during take off and landing for ear pressure- breastfeed, a bottle of formula or even a yoghurt/smoothie pouch if she doesn’t want milk will work, or a dummy if she has one. Have several changes of clothes for her and one for you and DH/DP if there is one. IDK what it is about planes but the chances of getting puked on or a nappy blow out increase dramatically on a flight (bitter experience). Enough nappies and wipes for a day and half to cover every worse case scenario from delays to lost luggage to unexpected stomach bug. Loads of snacks ideally ones that take a while to eat to pass some time like raisins or puffs and enough food plus formula if applicable to last for 24 hours in case of delays. If you are on formula ready made cartons and empty sterilised bottles are easiest. Formula, water in a sippy, baby food pouches are exempt from the liquid rules at security. Get organised, have everything you’re likely to need mid flight in a bag that’ll fit under the seat in front.

Mostly importantly it’s only 3.5 hours of your life and you’ll get through it!

Loads of snacks and a small new thing (doesn't need to be a toy) to pull out of the bag every half hour or so. Spare clothes for them and a change for you as well - I learnt this from bitter experience!

I third all the people saying take changes of clothes for all of you, from bitter experience! (somewhat reassuring that a similar thing seems to have happened to many of us).
Plus the breastfeeding / suckling for takeoff and landing.

Book extra legroom or a spare seat if you can.
