Hi my daughter (without children ) has been offered a place at both uni's and i,m looking for student information before she makes her finally choice. Any info would be good. Sorry to its not about being a student parent , just a worried mum . She will be studying fashion promotion. Thanks.

Hi i did my degree at uni of central lancashire and found it to be good on the whole although not in same subject as your dd

I have no experience of being a student in either of these places (although I did do a 3-year post-grad course at Preston but when I was 'grown up' ) but I do live and work in Preston - it is a great place for students - lots of bars, shops, clubs etc. Since the university has developed, the town has become very student-focused. I always found the library very good aswell.

Also, it is much cheaper to live up here than in Middlesex so might be worth bearing that in mind.

Where do you live, 45nanny?

Middlesex would be my first choice. Practically in London, so close to the hub of fashion industry. Much easier for her to get work experience in her holidays etc.

Thanks for the replies , we live in Luton , so middlesex is close by and preston the other end of the country. I just want her to make the right choice . Its not so much where it is as i have friends in preston who would watch over her and my father lives in middlesex who she could go to ; its just that i would like her to get the best from uni ,both on the studying side and the playing side. I have checked out both web sites and found some student reports a little worrying from middlesex. Just wanted honest answers and i knew i get them from mumsnetters.

Middlesex has half a dozen campuses apparently - I just read a couple of reviews on ciao which suggest that getting between them is a pain.

Preston is a small city and the uni has a nice compact campus - she'd be able to walk to most things - and Central Lancs is a v successful university.

It would be complicated (and expensive) for her to pop home for weekends from up here though (unless she has a car?).

Middlesex reviews

Central Lancs reviews

There are only a handful for both places though, going back to 2000.

Lots of local kids go to Central Lancs and I've not heard any grumbles. The 1st year accommodation is pretty good I believe.

The getting home for the weekend would be a problem from preston , but she does say that as she hates living here(me too) she would be happy to stay up there until xmas.I,m a little worried over the distance , but i dont think it should be the thing that she makes her decsion on . She is a fairly independant person and she plans to work most weeknd ,she wants to have as little debt as possible . I,m sur ethis will all change once she is at uni. I would like it if she was at middlesex as it is only 25mins drive , but the uni and accommadation doesnt look as promising. The course at lancs is good ,but as mrsmattie said fashion industry is london. Hard choice.

Manchester Fashion Network - any use? Nothing like as big as London of course, but at least there is some!

I did my degree and masters at Middlesex. It is in close proximity to central which is great, but does however mean it can be expensive to live. Also there are campuses all over north london which can sometimes feel very fragmented, especially if you have to travel to more than one campus.
I loved my time there and met some fantastic friends however, the fragmented design was difficult. Good luck to your dd. x
