Flying with a 10 month old tips

ive booked a holiday for next year where my son will be 10 months.
im a little nervous about flying and whether he’ll be settled on the flight, main reason being, he sleeps pretty great in the car seat / pram / cot however he isn’t great at sleeping in arms unless he’s super super tired. The flights are 4 hours and the one home is a night flight leaving at 10.30pm, so I’m worried his whole night sleep will be disturbed and we’ll struggle to settle him. Looking for any tips on what to bring when flying particularly for a 10 month old baby?

I have a load of other questions on general travel as well, I’d love to hear people’s advice / experiences:

  • can we bring a prep machine within luggage? I assume so but not fully sure
  • im planning to take a collapsible pram straight onto the flight (to then store overhead) , is this allowed and if not then do people usually opt for carriers?
  • is there anything I can bring that turns into a semi cot on the flight, I’ve seen this a couple of times on Instagram but it only seems to be people with front row seats that have it against the wall
  • Any recommendations on things to entertain him would be great, hoping he will sleep most of the way back but for the way there I imagine he will be awake for a good few hours!

It really depends on the baby how they will be at 10 months. My second was trotting up and down the aisle at that age and my first was barely crawling but books are great and the spinny toys you stick to the
windows.
It’s handy for them to be hungry to take up time eating too. If the pram fits the dimensions you can bring it onboard but check with the airline if you need to pay extra.
I always take a carrier for naps on planes, I think the bassinets you see are generally on long haul flights. I have to fly quite frequently with my young ones and the best thought I have is it’s only four hours of your life even if it’s awful it’s not for long.

Also no idea on the prep machine but the nuby rapid cool could be an easy portable option.

A 10 month old might only be on 3 bottles a day? Not worth carting a prep machine around for, imo.

Check the dimensions for cabin approved prams on your airlines website. We took a Bugaboo Ant on BA, and it was fine.

Most airlines won't allow anything inflatable/not approved, so doubt the cot thing is an option. Laps, or walking up and down the aisle to sleep seems most likely.

Take ten times the amount of snacks you think you'll need!

I would also take an iPad with kids TV downloaded. On a plane is not the time to be precious about screen time.

Just remember it is only 4 hours. It might not be easy, but it will be relatively quick...

A 10m old won't be on bottles, surely?

Snacks, water in a cup or sippy cup. A cheap fold up umbrella type pushchair that doesn't matter if it gets broken. Little books with things to lift up.

I used to fly regularly with my DC. Eldest was walking at 11m, youngest at 10m. Certainly not babies, definitely toddlers.
