Aunt favours niece over my child

Hi all

I have a 6 month old who is my absolute world and every time she smiles at me my heart could burst with love.
My husband's side of the family are very very close and his sisters both have children of their own. They are between the ages of 5-9.

It has become apparent that one of my husband's sisters favours my husband's niece over my daughter.

When our daughter was born this sister was all over her, came round for cuddles, bought loads of gifts, tidied our house but as our baby has grown we see much less of her like the novelty of our baby has worn off.

She never reaches out to ask how our baby is and anytime I post a photo of our baby in the family group chat she ignores it or doesn't react but does so when a photo of her other niece is shared. It is really hurtful

Please could you let me know how to cope with this without causing a family rift?

She's known the other niece for four and a half years longer. Hopefully she will get to know yours in time.
Babies are usually of more interest to their own parents than to others.
Enjoy your beautiful baby, and don't worry about other people.

Maybe she's not really a baby person? I have a 4 year old niece and a baby niece. The baby is lovely but babies can be quite boring once the new baby novelty has worn off and before they become more of a person.

I agree, try not to let this bother you too much OP. If they have children of similar ages maybe the two sisters are closer to each other than to your DH?

Surely this is normal to an extent?

Honestly you are being ridiculous. The fact is generally you will have a different relationship with your sisters children.

They were her first niece's and has known them years.

Your daughter is completely unaware and is fine.

Small babies are generally only enthralling to their parents.

I’m really close with one SIL and love my niece and nephew from her, see them regularly.

I don’t particularly like BiL or his wife so as a result not particularly fussed over their baby.

it’s life, she doesn’t owe your child anything. I’m sure the reason isn’t purely because she actually doesn’t like a 6 month old.
