They just need to get used to it. Every new negative sensation is basically the worst thing they've ever experienced in their life so far so they'll react accordingly. Over time they learn that it's really not that bad.

I don't remember my DD ever crying for nappy changes, wiggle yes but not cry. Make sure the mat is warm before you put baby on it, a quick rub with your hand or put a towel down so not directly onto the mat. I used to sing but any distraction is your friend. They will quickly get used to it x

  • the little vests can come off from the leg end! No one told me this but it was a came changer when I worked it out.
  • the vests can be used to keep their arms snuggled and out the way!
  • when they are old enough give them a nappy to hold and look at.
  • it's awful they hate it and it's like wrestling an octopus and sometimes poo gets everywhere.

Took 2 werka for DS to get used to it.
What worked was shushing in the ear loudly and sometimes the dummy worked to. Act 3/4 weeks he calmed right down and got used to it. It changed massively once we atartes to wash with very warm water instead of cold wet wipes.

Some advice I got was to always sing the same song when you’re about to change them. You can also clearly say and sign the word nappy. It’ll take some time to build the association but they feel safer when they know what’s coming.

It’s also helpful to have a few toys near the changing mat so you can grab a rattle or something to act as a distraction if needed.

One thing I will say though is that every baby is different. I remember one mum and baby group I went to where we all shared the biggest problem we were having (feeding, changing, sleep etc) and we all shared ideas to help. It was nice to talk but for most of us we’d tried the ideas already…they just hadn’t worked 😅 It’s always worth asking for advice - just don’t worry if it doesn’t work for your baby.

I think some little ones are much more sensitive to new physical sensations than others. My little one was at the very sensitive, very loud-crying-prone end of the scale
I found it really disheartening when other parents said, oh they don't need to cry, if you do it right they don't cry. That's not true for some bubs.
It feels like forever, but they do change and grow so quickly, and become more resilient. Sorry, that's not really a hack. But I exhausted myself trying to apply all the hacks right - there are endless websites and books you can trawl through for more and more ideas. Finally I've come to accept that my little one is an emotional sparkler!!
This was the most helpful thing I came across for understanding crying:

Number 2 i figured out once DS1 was 9months old and was adamant on touching everything including what was inside his nappy!,

Entertainment! I didn't strip my children either as they'll get cold.
Do they have a baby gym? Put them in it with change mat, muslin on top for a nice warm surface. Whip off nappy, wipe and get new nappy on quickly ... hopefully whilst they're entertained with the gym ... or give them a cloth book / teddy etc

Oh one other thing - keep some muslins/kitchen roll ready next to the mat. A lot of babies go through a phase where they like to wee the second fresh air hits their privates (usually when you’ve got your hands full too) and there’s not much you can do about it if you’re not prepared (though in a pinch you can sacrifice the nappy you’re holding)
