Starting tommorrow- potty Training DD1 (nearly 3.8years) Inspiration & Advice required

We are going to attempt big girl knickers again tommorrow as I have a run of 7 days off.
DD knows exactly when she needs to go
(she has in the past asked to have her nappy on and then had a wee seconds later). Our problem is she stays dry in knickers all day -no accidents but no wees or poos either. Any advice welcome. Thanks

Not sure if I understand. She can stay dry all day but doesn't wee or poo on those days and will only wee in her nappy?

beckystaffs · 29/04/2008 19:54

Yes, if she has her knickers on, she is dry, but also she doesn't wee or poo in potty toilet either. She can go all day and do nothing.
Last time we tried the HV told me she obviously wasn't ready and to stop as she would more than likely end up with a urine infection if she continued.
We put a nappy on her at bedtime and within 15 min she was standing at the top if the stairs saying she'd done a wee. It had literally flooded the nappy and her pjs and there was a puddle on the floor.
What can i do to make her want to go on the toilet/potty?

Would she sit on her potty if it was one of those little chair types, and watch a video whilst having lots of drinks and snacks?? That's how I trained my ds1 when he was approaching 3. He was encouraged to sit there until he eventually wee'd, after a couple of times of doing weeing in his potty he was so thrilled with the praise that he was happy to use it again.

Or could you try one of those toilet inserts so she really is a 'big' girl using the big toilet? Another thing my son liked was videos and we had a free one from Pampers or someone showing a child using a potty, he loved to copy that too.

My ds2 trained himself at 2.5, think it was because he saw his big brother using the big toilet and wanted to be just like him .

Good luck and if she is very resistant I'd probably leave it a while longer again so that it doesn't turn into a battle of wills.

thanks telly addict.
We have a potty (just a standard one) and she does sit on it and says finished, but its still empty. I tell her "well done" anyway and have a clap. We have also got a pink princess seat for the toilet with handles because she was scared of sitting on the seat.
i would love a video/dvd of someone actually doing something on potty though- I think this would appeal- I shall have a look on pampers website. Thanks

my ds did hold it in at the start, although never for that long...i used tv and dvds to sit him on the potty for as long as poss...i would turn tv off if he got up for too long. once he had done a couple of wees by accident and then got more sweets and praise i seemed to click.

Poos still a bit hit and miss (3 weeks in), but i have heard it takes longer for poos.

At 3.8 years, she is old enough to understand that nappies are for babies and she is a big girl now. Don't put another nappy on her, day or night. If she can hold her pee for 12 hours, she can also hold it through the night.

I'm sure that she won't even have an accident and will start using the toilet if she knows there will be no nappy coming at night, nor the next day.

beckystaffs · 29/04/2008 20:56

CoteDAzur- she has better pelvic floor muscles than me!! I couldn't hold on that long. Her nappy is often dry inthe morning. Then she floods it again after about 15 min, right through to pj's.

Take her dry nappy off first thing in the morning, and she won't have the chance to fill it after 15 mins.

beckystaffs · 29/04/2008 21:10

That is usually around 5.30am - do you think that is too early?
might move potty into our bedroom tonight- for when she wakes up in the morning.

She sleeps with you?
What happens at 5:30? Does she get up? Does she go back to sleep?

Seriously, I would just take off the nappy and never buy another one again. She is old enough to go to the toilet by herself if she feels the need to pee at 5:30.

colacubes · 29/04/2008 21:15

Try a choclate every time she goes on the potty!! simple but effective, she is obviously trained, but in an odd manner, not toilet but nappy trained, I agree with Cote, no more nappies, explain that they dont make nappies for big girls anymore, only for babies, so she will have to wee on the potty. Take her to choose her own potty, my mum swears by a potty like a seat, says it makes them more comfortable than just perching on a bowl.

Good luck

Clary · 29/04/2008 21:19

becky I agree, no more nappies.

How about the big loo? At 3.8 she is prob (unless very petite) literally too big for the potty anyway.

DS2 never sat on the potty (not grown up enough for him ) and it was fine. We had a seat on the loo as he was barely 2, but yr DD could prob sit on the big loo herself.

Do you think it is a comfort/safety thing? It's not unusual for children to want a nappy to pooh in even when weeing OK on loo.

ChipButty · 29/04/2008 21:20

I would agree with going 'cold turkey' on the nappies too.

Does she have a little girl that she looks up to (a friend, cousin etc) who could take her to the loo and show her that that's where big girls go to wee?

Above all try to stay relaxed about it and do not make a fuss if she doesn't make it straightaway - just lots of praise when she does. Good luck.

beckystaffs · 29/04/2008 21:22

Usually dp or I get up with her (must admit weekdays I let her go to the bathroom with Dp whilst he has a shower ready for work and try and get another half an hour sleep she sits on the toilet seat down- chatting to him). She is awake then until 7pm- has always been an early riser. Dp's alarm goes off at 6am anyway.

clary- she is very petite (only weighs 2 stone 2 lb) but might prefer sitting on toiler.
Chipbutty-Her little friend is toilet trained, but she shes her a big girl- she is going to school in september but my dd won't be going until next year as she is a September baby.
colacubes- might pop to tescos on way home(am at work) to get some choc bribes)
