Any tips to get rid of lingering chest phlegm on 1 year old baby

Does anyone have any tips to help get rid of lingering chest phlegm for my 1 year old?

He started nursery beginning of Oct and obviously picked up the standard nursery viral infections. He's better now with no other symptoms but has had lingering chest phlegm for absolutely ages now. It's worst at night as he constantly wakes himself up with coughing.

We have tried the following....

  • Sterimar Baby Nasal spray

  • Snufflebabe Vapour chest rub & oil that we put on tissue

*Broncostop Junior cough syrup

  • Shower steam

  • Apple juice mixed with warm water with lemons and ginger added

Any suggestions would be appreciated as nothing seems to be cutting it 😩 and he needs solid sleep 😩

Have you tried using nebuliser with saline 0.9% (twice a day)? This is the only thing (bar prescription medication) that clears it quickly for my son.

I've got one similar to this one:

Can you prop him up a bit to sleep so he's not lying flat?

Also, and for a baby this age, youy'll have to be a bit careful to make this work, a warm comrpess on his chest a couple of times a day. Those microwave bean bags are a good choice (my Lithuanian cleaner swore by jacket potatoes in a tea towel but this is the compromise we came to when DS was struggling years ago!).

Does bouncing on an exercise ball (with him in your arms) help him cough it up?

Naps in a pushchair or car seat?

Hope you can help him, mine were similar when little. Coughed till they vomited too.

I haven't tried the exercise ball technique ❤️

It does seem more when he's lying down and at night x

There is some research that honey (1tsp) before bed is effective at reducing coughing overnight. We use this and I think it works although admittedly my daughter has never had a very persistent cough

Lots of ticking games, as they then take big breaths which helps get air behind any retained secretions.

Similarly, blowing toys like recorders or bubbles are helpful.

Songs or stories where you can introduce a blowing element, like three little pigs.

If you get the child to lay down on their side, you could try some very gentle patting on their chest with a cupped hand

Also you need to be very careful with nebulisers, and should only use it with a child of that age if it has been prescribed and has medical oversight.

Likewise, I'd never recommend inhaling steam for such a young child, despite all the anecdotal 'evidence' that it helps

Cdoc · 03/12/2024 20:05

We were advised by the GP that a dose of piriton at bedtime can really help with the night time cough, could be worth all go?

BananaPalm · 03/12/2024 22:02

@DaisyDooox Actually using the nebuliser before bedtime might be the reason why your DC can't sleep! My paediatrician said that you should do the last nebulising around 3-4 hours before bed. This is because it loosens up the mucus so the child needs to have time to cough it up when they are awake. Otherwise they will be coughing in their sleep... which I believe is your issue...
