Sensory processing disorder or just normal toddler?

Hi all, just got myself worried about my 15 month old tonight.
My boy has a few things he doesn't like:

  • doesn't like wearing hats although will except a balaclava style
  • hates having his face or nose wiped
  • doesn't like having clothes put on although that's more because he doesn't want to sit still.

He learnt to walk at 13 months but is still very clumsy. I know this can be a sign of sensory processing disorder.

Furthermore he is really struggling with nursery. He's been going for three months now and still struggling to settle and will cry whenever he doesn't have staff right next to him.

He has 5/6 words, knows 5 body parts, points, flaps and waves and when he's with people he knows is the happiest boy ever.

Are these all normal behaviours for his age or should I speak to someone?

Sounds completely normal to me.

Sounds normal to me, I have one DC with and one DC who does not have sensory processing issues.

I'd say completely normal, my oldest has SPD and honestly your list would be waaay longer of things that he doesn't like

Ah okay. I'm probably being just a worried first time mum and have nothing to compare him to x

I agree.
I have never met a toddler who likes getting dressed or having a nose wiped.

&@Alice4417 honestly my little boy is physically sick at the sight of any kind of empty packet because he hates the sound it makes so much 🫣

My 20 month old is exactly the same. Wont wear a hat, pulls it straight off, cries when getting his nose/mouth wiped and would rather be naked all the time than wear clothes. Always just assumed it's normal toddler behaviours

All the things in your list, without exception, normal.

Completely agree

I think for 15 months this is all normal. But if it goes on past 3ish then maybe signs of SPD.

Speak to nursery about him not being settled and ask if they think he may be showing signs of ND. although if they say no that doesn't mean he's not my kids childcare always said no he's not ND but now age 8 he's got multiple diagnosis. I remember asking in here too and being told all was normal so while people are saying your kids sounds age appropriate please don't take that as gospel. But it really is too young to get anyone to take you seriously in real life

Completely normal. No kid likes having their nose and face wiped. Mine still doesn’t at age 4, also still hates having clothes put on her (wants to do it herself), and has never liked hats although will tolerate them now if really cold. She’s completely normal and no issues have ever been raised by nursery and now school.

Popcorn23 · 30/11/2024 23:56

Definitely completely normal. Mine defends his nose as if his life depends on it when I try to wipe it!

When little ones go through development stages that do change their behaviours quite a bit. It might be that.
