Terrible gas in 14 week old

My baby has struggled with gas since birth. He spit up a fair bit when younger, took him to gp who said it was normal. The spit up never really bothered him. From 4am onwards he would be writhing around trying to fart or poo and would only be happy once he did get it all out around 8am.

The last 2 weeks have been a nightmare, everyone said the gas gets better but it's got so much worse. He's now waking up every hour at least trying to pass wind and during the day there is a lot of crying, chewing his hands (which he does when he needs to fart or poo). He'll get a bit of relief if I do bicycle legs etc then it starts again.

He had a tongue tie cut at 4 weeks, he goes to the osteopath, I've given up dairy, soy and eggs since he was 6 weeks. I don't think it's reflux because he's happy on his back on the playmat and in his crib. He falls asleep at the breast and it's often the only thing that comforts him. He sometimes burps himself on the breast but hard to burp him myself now (was easier when he was younger for some reason).

What else can I try or has anyone had this experience? I'm a single parent so these nights and days are really draining me

So good that she can sleep longer stretches it makes all the difference! We had another night of hourly wake ups last night 🙄 Did you do anything differently during the regression? He has also had overtiredness and screaming during the day! This for me has actually been the toughest phase so far

My allergy DC woke hourly until they were 4 (years).

Yes so we downloaded Huckleberry and religiously adhered to the suggested nap times for 2 weeks and it massively helped.

Downside was lack of social life for 2 weeks but it beat the demonic shrieking hands down and this week where we've played things more by ear has gone really well. She does wake every hour between 4 and 7am but has long stretches from 8pm-4am so we've started going yo sleep earlier.

Hold onto the fact that this won't be forever, and that you can get your own back once they're a teen and you're pulling their covers at 9am 🤣

Hi,
Just following here since I have a 7 week old with the same wind issues to see if any of you had this resolved or found out what it was.
My baby is also suffering with terribly with gas non stop, to the point it is ruined the breastfeeding journey that she can’t stay still on the breast while feeding from all the gass. She has formula feeds now too but is the same after formula, non stop having gas and wriggles in pain.
If any of you have found a solution or it improved it self trough time? We are really struggling and feel so helpless. HV and GP just say they will grow out of it. Thanks

If you are still breastfeeding, please get your latch checked. It sounds like your baby was unable to make a seal on your brrast effectively. Unfortunately gas is more common in bottle feeds due to the way babies feed.

Hi I haven’t had it checked with this baby but even after bottle feed where I burp her evey oz she still seems in pain after a feed same as with the breast. I need to get in touch with someone for latch to have it checked. It’s just sad there is not a lot of support out there. She pulls and wriggles at the breast in pain or will just scream if I try feeding her. It’s really hard to read the clues if she is hungry but in too much pain to eat or wants to comfort but then all the fussiness at the breast pulling on and off makes her get even more air in.

My 14 week old is suffering from trapped wind and refuses to feed. Did things get better?

Lcfmmm · 24/02/2025 17:03

Also she’s doesn’t seem to latch on the bottle well
. She drinks and then it’s like she unlatches because bubbles come up and then she drinks ago band this continues throughout the feed. We have asked about Tounge tie but HV said tounge was fine. She looks like she has a high palate would this causes latch problems?

orzo15 · 24/02/2025 18:52

Things did get better but not until around 4-5 months, and even now he can struggle in the early morning. Mine is breastfed but also had a poor latch early on. HV said he didn't have a tongue tie but I paid for a lactation consultant who very quickly said he was very tongue tied and had a lip tie, so had that cut at 5 weeks old. He also has a high palate which is from the tongue tie. It took several more weeks for his latch to improve unfortunately so it's not a quick fix

Did the HV put on gloves, feel in your baby's mouth for restricted movement? If not, you need someone who will do this. You can see a tongue restriction but it needs a proper assessment as sometimes it's further back and hidden, or a baby can stick their tongue out and so it's dismissed (the elevation - lift - of the tongue is really crucial). The high palate and the other things suggest you may benefit from a breastfeeding specialist.

Be aware that as your baby is older a tongue division may be a lot harder for her to experience and it will take longer for her to relearn how to feed.

Hi Hoscar,
I am sorry your little one is suffering with gas. My little girls is eleven months now, still very gassy but less bothered by it. With us it turned out she has cow milk protein allergy and some other intolerances that we are still trying to figure out. What helped us at the time was eliminating possible culprits out of my diet since she is breastfed, if your baby has regular milk she might benefit from switching to hypoallergenic milk and if still has issues like gass, reflux, traces of blood in stool and mucus then she might even need special prescribed formula. Maybe try switching to hypoallergenic and visit the gp if any other symptoms present. My baby has bad silent reflux and mucus and at one point traces of blood in stool it took us ages to get diagnosed and referred to dietitian and she is still on omeprazole for reflux but nothing really totally solved the issue
