Formula to milk

Hello. My LO just turned one. He still has 3 bottles a day schedule

6am 7oz bottle
8am breakfast
11.30 lunch
13.30 7oz bottle
15.30 snack
17.00 dinner
19.00 8oz bottle

How would I go about the switch? He isn’t a great eater, only eats small portions, so top up with formula which seems to work. I cant straight swap all 3 bottles to whole milk though as that would be too much milk (recommend 16ozs I believe) would 2 whole milk one formula be okay? Or is that still too much dairy as formula has dairy. He also has yoghurt every morning so again potentially too much dairy, so looking for advice re how to go about this please?

thank you.

recently done this transition and just mixed the forumla with cows milk. although DS was on smaller bottles already 5oz, 5oz and 6oz. started with mixing 2oz cows milk and rest forumla and every couple of days just upped the cows milk by 1oz until all cows milk. also started with just one bottle a day to ensure it didn't upset his system. he transitioned over fine and now just has warmed cows milk. you will probably have to cut bottle sizes slightly like you say so it isn't too much, and too much cows milk can also cause iron problems.

you might find he eats more solids when on cows milk as cows milk isn't a meal like formula, but is only a filling drink.

From age 1 it's 300/350mls that recommended which is about 10-12oz. We only had the am and pm milk by then. I started giving 1 as cows milk and kept the other as formula for a week or so and then switched the other to cows milk.

I started by dropping the afternoon bottle and changing the morning one straight to cows milk. I kept formula in the evening bottle during this transition mainly because I didn’t want to rattle bedtimes. My daughter was fine with the one bottle so I switched the evening bottle to cows milk and offered a snack also, just to make sure she slept through the night. No issues and I’m about to drop the morning bottle and switch to milk in sippy cup alongside breakfast. My daughter transitioned fine so I expect her to be getting most of her dairy from her meals etc shortly. She is also on vitamins now due to reduced milk.

The recommended amount is for formula AND milk not just for cows milk and then you can have formula on top.

It's because more milk/formula than that fills them up and they don't get what they need from solids.

I'd drop to two milk feeds

I can do

6am breakfast which is yoghurt
8am snack and maybe 120ml whole milk in a sippy cup?
11.30 lunch

what about between 11.30-17.30 lunch and dinner? As atm he has 13.30 bottle and 15.30 snack. He naps 2.30-3.30 ish. What snack at what time to get him from lunch to dinner? It’s all new to me dont want a small snack so hes hungry and grumpy or too big he wont eat his dinner.

17.30 dinner
19.30 maybe 180ml whole milk?

so thats 300ml whole milk and yoghurt?

sorry it’s all new and stressful.

I would maybe leave the existing bottle and breakfast where they are.
Snack at 10/10.30
Lunch at 12.30/1
Snack at 3.30
Dinner at 5.30
Bottle at 7.30

So am i right in thinking i can give 3 dairy portions say 4oz whole milk, yoghurt and another 4oz whole milk and can still have formula on top if needed as formula isn’t counted as a dairy portion while we transition?

I did 75% formula and 25% milk for a few days, then 50/50, then 25% formula and 75% milk then 100 % milk.

I also switched from bottle to tippy cup.

Sunseeker83 · 29/11/2024 12:22

It's not a strict rule that they can't have more. It would be fine for him a bit more formula for a while. But you are aiming to transition off formula to the recommended amount of dairy. They don't have to have any milk at all if they are getting enough calcium from other sources (yoghurt, cheese, bread etc)

The way the above poster has described it is also how I did it. Mix formula and milk together and slowly decrease the proportion of formula so it's eventually all milk. I changed the amount every couple of days so it took about a week or two
