Toddler constantly unwell

Since the end of October my little boy (3 next month) has had back to back viruses. Literally one after the other. He has a few days in between where he's ok and then gets another temp and the cycle starts again. So he's had 4 different illnesses just this month alone. They are all different things and one included a sickness bug but he was only sick once.
This latest is a lot of green snot and a cough. He only does 2 mornings at pre school and he's been about once in the whole month because he's not been well enough.
I've never known him have a spell like this! Usually we have 3-4 months at least between viruses. We do mix a lot- stay and plays twice a week and a library group so he does have a lot of opportunity to catch things. I'm just burned out massively. I'm 35 weeks pregnant so exhausted anyway and up in the night with him because he's not well.
Partner is amazing and will do anything for us but little boy won't even entertain him looking after him after work etc.
Just a vent really and to see if anyone else is going through similar ?
He does get over the viruses himself quite fast but then it's onto the next one.

DS 2 in the same boat.. Went to nursery 3 days in between and then off again with cough... The older one had fever and just runny nose, never issues with coughing and lungs so I am struggling all over again with this as something new... Sleepless nights and terrible comment from Dr "he will get pneumonia if you don't pull him out of nursery for a long period of time"...Funnily, he does not have a fever, but is at home for 10 days now and I'm WFH and taking care of him which is just an impossible task.. Also, a comment from a Dr to make me feel even worse is something like Is your work more important than your child's health, as a response me just coming back from maternity leave and being hesitant to take sick days and also saying out loud that it's a shame he has to miss nursery for such a long time since he just settled in and stopped crying

Miracle1116 · 28/11/2024 21:27

But overall 2 months of bugs, even after one round of antibiotics he got a new one in a few days... No words of wisdom, we'll have to stay strong during winter I suppose :-)

Especially as you're pregnant, I would put the work in now to hold the boundary that sometimes it's daddy's turn. You don't want to do it when the baby is here and have him blame the baby.

Miracle1116 · 28/11/2024 21:30

Using multivitamins and probiotics, he eats very well, still breastfeeding, so all immunity boosters are in place and still is just much worse autumn in nursery than I ever remember having with the older one🤔

Unic0rnSparkle0405 · 28/11/2024 21:31

I could of written this about my 16 month old little boy. He attends nursery 3 days per week and since the start of October has had a virus nearly every week with around 3 days in between of being well before the next virus hits. It is absolutely exhausting. He was constantly poorly for the first two months after he started in April and things really calmed down but since autumn/winter has hit it's been relentless trying to juggle all the illnesses with work on top, I can't imagine how you feel being heavily pregnant too. Super mum!

Maverick66 · 28/11/2024 21:36

Grandson was exactly like this when he was at creche and his younger sibling is the same. However since turning 4 he seems to have fewer viruses which I put down to him having built up a great immune system whilst at creche. He's started school in September and has only had one virus since starting.

My dd is 13 months and has picked up a new bug, virus or cold every week lately. Presumably from nursery - she goes 3 days a week. We don't have jobs that can be done from home and have no family help so it's been so stressful. She's missed about 7 days of nursery in the last 2 months. I'm truly fed up with it and I have her current cold too. She's also had threadworms recently!

Anyone able to recommend multivitamins that are just drops that can go on a spoon. She won't take any of the ones that require a whole spoonful, even disguised in food or drink. She does have bio Gaia probiotics with vit d as that's just 5 little drops a day. She still breastfeeds a lot, but that doesn't seem to be helping immunity!

LoremIpsumCici · 28/11/2024 21:41

Some is due to normal exposure.
It is never too soon to introduce him to frequent handwashing before eating/snacks or carrying around anti-bac wipes to wipe things down (library books) or his hands after playing with communal toys.

overwork · 28/11/2024 21:47

If his snot is green have you seen a doctor? The greener the snot the more chance it's bacterial rather than viral I've been told, in which case he might need a helping hand to get over it

I'm absolutely hot on this and he washes his hands before he eats , even at snack time at stay and play. I think when there's kids coughing and sneezing around him that's where it's from.

I phoned my GP at 8am today because it's day 4 now of a temp and being unwell. No appointments and told me to go urgent care. He picked up this afternoon. But then went downhill around 5ish so I phoned GP again for emergency slot but they wouldn't see him and told me to go to a&e.
There's absolutely no way I'm sitting in a&e for 10 hours with a child who needs rest and being this pregnant.
He's currently sleeping and temp has reduced with medicine so will try Gp again tomorrow but hoping he's through the worst.

It's so hard isn't it! They don't seem to catch a break.
I also breast fed until he was 2 years 3 months and it was a saviour to keep him hydrated when he was poorly but not sure how much it's done for his immune system.

I totally agree with this but it's really hard when he's not well and just wants me because obviously I just want to help him and not see him upset as well as feeling like rubbish. He's usually ok with his dad when I'm out of sight and when he's well.

The NHS ABD ones available from Superdrug are just five drops.

No I wouldn't want to go to A&E neither.
I went through all this last week with my toddler. GP couldn't see him, 111 sent us to a prescribing pharmacist who can't prescribe for children, pharmacist told me off for not emphasising the green snot, but she did call the GP for me and wouldn't budge when the receptionist said there was no appointments. Receptionist eventually agreed to the GP calling me after clinic, who diagnosed a chest infection and prescribed antibiotics. And when I asked how he knew it was bacterial, he said it was the green snot. Yellow is fine apparently!

Got him a Gp Appointment finally. Receptionist was very rude and asked why I hadn't taken him to urgent care /a&e and I explained because its an 8 hour wait with a toddler and I didn't feel he was an a&e case. This is the problem with the country. Everyone just gets sent to a&e regardless. But she made out I was neglecting my child by not taking him. She said "they wouldn't have made you wait that long if he was that bad" which I thought was a really unprofessional comment.
He had a temp of 40 in the night but crucially it came down with calpol and i watched him like a hawk all night and his condition didn't worsen. I know him resting in bed was better for him than waiting in a hospital.

See I was told that the threshold for seeing babies was low and that we'd always get an appointment for a poorly baby but it's not the case is it. And we're told not to waste hospital resources but it's impossible to get seen in primary care.
I hope that the GP is a much better experience than the receptionist was and your little boy gets better ASAP

Thank you. GP just as useless and refused to treat him for anything due to the temp lasting 5 days. She said we need to go to hospital. So we are 2 hours into an a&e wait, sigh.

How did a you get on OP?
I am in similar situation. Except fever for close to a month, seen GP 3 times. Twice given different antibiotic, than went to A&E which told me he is fine…. And if nothing improves to come in 3 days.

Guess what? Nothing is improving so I will be back in A&E.
Such an absolute bollocks and waste of resources.
