My 14 week old son has a partial closure of his sagittal suture (sagittal craniosynostosis).
The condition was only found by chance, as I asked a private paediatrician for an x-ray. No other paediatrician / midwife / GP / health visitor identified the issue. Likely because his head actually looks quite normal, he just has a narrow fontanelle.
We are now under the care of Great Ormond Street Hospital, having had our first appointment with a consultant who informed us spring-assisted cranioplasty was necessary / possible given his young age. No cranial pressure is suspected and hasn’t been checked.
However, having now read extensively about the surgeries, I am confused. It sounds like the surgeries are purely for reshaping the head (cosmetic / aesthetic reasons) rather than reducing the risk of pressure on the brain or development issues down the line. I was never concerned about the look of my son’s head, only the potential health conditions that could occur.
Has anyone gone through the decision of surgery for their child? Why or why not did you proceed? If my baby’s head looks normal, does he still need the surgery for medical reasons?
Thank you!!
