Severe nappy rash worries

Apologies if this has been done to death but can anyone advise why my 7 and a half month old ds has had a couple of bouts of severe nappy rash in the last week?

We usually use reusables but have switched to disposables since the rashes appeared. He's never really suffered more than a touch of redness before and its at the point now where its actually started to bleed, poor little love. The first one healed in a couple of days and this latest bout appeared yesterday. His stools have been a little loose but not consistently and it doesn't seem to be worrying him much but its certainly worrying me

Other than very regular changes and smothering in Sudacrem does anyone have any words of wisdom?

Thanks lots

Sounds like he is teething. Stop using sudocrem, it's crap - buy some metanium, which comes in a yellow tube. Boots sell it. It's as thick as paste and glues itself in a barrier onto the kid's bum!

Also, every time he pooes, get him out of the nappy immediately and into the shawer to wash off with plain water.

Don't use baby wipes at all until the rash clears, honestly they sting so much.

Metanium? Will get some immediately - thanks Smugcolditz. Have already ditched wipes as figured they wouldn't exactly be helping.

Might well be teething - he's dribbling pints....

ditto what smugcolditz said, sudo cream made my dd's bum red raw, although I did not realise that that was doing it at first so kept putting it on. It works for my ds though so I guess they are all different. Metanium worked really well for my dd and fairly well on my ds.

Are there any spots? He might have a fungal infection. If it doesn't clear up with the metanium, get some canestan (for nappy rash, not fanjo ) and try that. Or if you go to your GP, you can get it on prescription.

No spots spicemonster but lol at your post!

I agree with the Metanium, was the only thing that helped DD1's bleeding bottom. I was also given a top tip, instead of using wipes you can use aqueous cream on a tissue/cotton wool. At home I had a huge tub of cream, and when out just a small tube and some tissues in my change bag. Really good at cleaning their bottoms and keeping them soft.

Ds had a few really bad bouts of nappy rash (each time it seemed related to a temporary lactose intolerance following an illness). One time he was so bad that we had to give him calpol becuase the poor chap couldn't bear to sit down. We tried most of the creams (sudocream did nothing), metanium was fairly good, but for us the only one that really helped and didn't seem to sting his sore bot was weleda calendula cream. I bought it in our local health food shop and at the time I was a bit sceptical and fed up that I had spent so much on bum cream but it is great really healing and smells fab. Defintely change immediately (if the poo was of a certain type just a few mins would see DS bottom start to turn red)and ditch the wipes and use water until he is better. Some people recommended dilute camomile tea as a wash as it is supposed to be soothing.

spicemonster · 28/04/2008 20:58

glad I made you smile - it's horrible when they've got nasty nappy rash, not a very smiley time. PFNM - I used cold chamomile tea on my DS. Don't know if it helped but certainly agree that either that or water only until it gets better.

Since I've started using Jackson Reece wipes, my DS seems to have a very happy bum. They have aloe vera, tea tree oil and lavender in them so soothing and healing at once.

As someone already said you can rinse his bottom in the shower if you are at home. If you are out or don't have time for shower, use cotton wool or damp flannel and also I think dry it with a small towel/dry flannel.

Lie him on his change mat with a towel or cotton nappy underneath for as long as you can at every nappy change. Don't put anything in the bath such as baby wash.

Just wanted to say the aqueous cream/metanium combo have done the job and boyos bum is started to return to its gorgeous peachy state! Thanks lots and lots for great tips x

Pennypops, what is the name of the aqeuous cream you are using? I want to try this instead of cotton wool and water.

have you tried silk liners in camomile tea? Heard thats a good one in washable nappies.
