Toddler first stomach bug, any advice ?

My toddler has just started with his first stomach bug , so far he’s only being sick after eating or drinking anything. He’s asleep again now but I’ve never dealt with a tummy bug in a child before so any advice ?
Do I keep offering fluids even though he seems to be brining them straight back up? How long do they typically last?

Just plenty of fluids if they have runny tummy they need the stuff in the link i provided .Keep offering fluids or ice lollys anything to acidic or dairy to avoided for next few days. After 24hrs try offer dry toast toast or crackers if they can keep that down try later in the day with simple soup like knorr chicken noodle soup its watery so easier to keep down. The following day start building up again try dry cereal for breakfast maybe offer a banana and offer water.Lunch simple ham sandwiches and dinner keep it plainish so maybe boiled baby potato's steamed veg plain roasted chicken. The following day their stomach should have recovered fully

Keep offering fluids. Encourage them to have sips. In general, the first 24 hours will be the worst part, and after that it will settle quickly. Be prepared to do lots of laundry

Thank you, really helpful!
Is it inevitable that I’ll get it too ?
Typical it has started the same day my husbands gone on a trip without us (his first in 3 years) so if I come down with it I’m solo parenting and also pregnant. I think I’m more worried about that than the amount of laundry at the moment

I usually always have a sippy cup of water. There's nothing worse than the sicky taste in the back of your throat.

I lay towels all over the floors.
Bucket by the bed.
Waterproof mattress protector
Box of tissues

Ice piles

They rally quickly.

I've definitely avoided tummy bugs when my kids have had them but I go around spraying germ killer, especially on toilet handles etc

rip the joys of family life unfortunately when it comes to illness it burns through a house like wildfires .Buy isotonic drinks for yourself now that way if you catch it your prepared to keep hydrated and order a food delivery .Maybe order a few kids ready meals so when they recover and if you catch it ,theres easy frozen ready meals just in case for you to cook for them

I am pregnant to and got noro off mine a few weeks ago so much fun =p

be prepared to rest on the sofa for a few days with the kids tv channel on for the little one.Dont feel guilty if they have to watch tv for a few days we have all had to do it when our other half at work and were stuck being ill with a toddler.

I'm pretty sure the advice is don't offer fluids (initially) until vomiting has passed (assuming not long term as you don't want dehydration).
I made this mistake as a first time mum a few years ago and every time she was sick I offered a sip of water. 20 mins later she was vomiting again. On repeat for hours. I read afterwards that during the initial few hours avoid water after vomiting as the stomach is so sensitive and will reject anything and so the active vomiting stage can be lengthened.

DD vomits copiously when she has a cough - my top tip would be to have a spare set of bedding easily to hand, ie not in a drawer - and a laundry basket/plastic box to put sicky bedding straight into and then get it to the washing machine. If you’re on your own, can also put toddler into the box whilst you strip the bed/cot, and give them a face wash or whatever. Then clean jimjams on, put box of sicky bedding outside the door, and clean sheets on ASAP. I tend to put the first load on a quick wash and tumble asap so I’m not worrying about running out of bedding (we have 4 sets, I think) and then if we make it through the night I wash it again, with any additional bedding, on a hotter wash. Good luck!

Not necessarily

CouchSweetPotatoes · 23/11/2024 22:10

I have almost never caught a stomach bug off my kids. I spray handles etc, wash their and my hands well, but I’m certainly not fastidious.

I agree wait until the vomiting has slowed down to offer sips of water. I normally offer banana when they’re ready to eat - doesn’t hurt a sore throat, gentle on the tummy.

Bobbybobbins · 23/11/2024 22:13

We were told to wait at least 15 mins after a vomiting episode to offer sips of water. But do try to keep small amounts of liquid coming in. Check they are still urinating.

charltonred · 23/11/2024 22:15

I’m so glad I posted this is all so helpful and making me feel better about managing this.
Last time he was sick he’d just had a sip of water so I’ll hold off on the water for a bit.

@Bobbybobbins his last nappy was pretty dry but he’d been refusing water , I’m guessing now because his tummy hurt. Will try to offer sips in the morning if he sleeps through that is.

I’m just a bit worried I’ll have caught it before he started being sick if that makes sense as he’s always drinking out of my water bottle etc I’ve been cleaning everything religiously since it started so I guess only time will tell.

Try layering waterproof sheets and bed sheets so if dc are sick in bed, it doesn't take too long to change the bed.

I also saw a thing about glowsticks in the sick bowl overnight so they can find it easily.

Good luck!

SchoolQuery1981 · 23/11/2024 22:20

I don't think I've ever caught a sickness bug off DD, so there is definitely hope.

Just make sure you keep the area and especially your hands scrupulously clean.

Water is very important, 5ml at a time if necessary as the biggest risk is dehydration. Keep an eye on her pee, if she stops peeing, or it gets dark, seek medical advice.

When he says he is hungry, go for very bland and unchellenging foods. Toast. Banana. Those Ella's kirchen pouches of apple.

Be aware of choking risk when he's asleep, I often shared a bed with DD when she was little if she was sick.
