To change spelling of DDs name...

Apologies for posting on parenting, thought there could be more relevant experience here.

DD is 10 and she has a beautiful name with a beautiful meaning. At the time we chose the longer spelled version but over time we have started using the shorter form (same pronunciation both ways).

My other children have names with less letters and she has asked why hers is so long.

Any way of changing this legally without major implications to her in future?

Below is an example, this is not her name but I couldn't think of anything else to share with you:

Raechelle - Rachel

You're going to cause vastly more confusion by using one spelling in some situations, and the original in others.

A few years ago I read about a young woman who was refused boarding at the airport on a girls holiday, because her friend had booked the flights and didn't know that the official spelling of the girl's name was different from the spelling she used in daily life. It didn't match her passport so she was left behind.

If your DD thinks the extra letters are confusing, she's going to find having two spellings even worse. You're not helping by encouraging this.

So choose one and stick with it, and use a deed poll if she goes for the simpler (more unusual, actually) spelling.

Aliya looks like the name you'd get on a Starbucks cup when the barista doesn't have a clue.

Aaliyah is beautiful. I'd let her shorten it unofficially if she wants and then decide later.

I thought Aaliyah was the normal spelling of Aaliyah but is that because of the singer? I can see Aliyah and Aliyya are also used. It definitely doesn't look like one of those Kaeyciii type names that you see.

I have a short easy to spell name and I love it! Never had any issues and bloody glad.

i would definitely change it to the easy to know one - a lifetime of ease!!

Many different forms I think, but I guess everyone's is saying Aaliyah is the norm/more mainstream because of the singer.

Oh, just seen her name is Aaliyah.

That's not comparable to Raechelle at all.

I'd leave it as it is

AegonT · 25/11/2024 20:02

I would assume the spelling is Aaliyah. I wouldn't be able to guess Aliya. I would keep it as it is, it's only 7 letters. Lovely name.

AegonT · 25/11/2024 20:03

Before you said the name my guess as Orlaith vs Orla!

Op I've never came across the name but I think Aaliyah looks obvious in how to pronunce it. Using the long and short version of A, A for Ape and Ah for Apple
A - Lie - Ah

Aliya is likely to end up as Ali-a

Aaliyah must be the established way of writing it so leave alone.

Forgot to mention that we pronounce her name as Ah-lee-ya not A-lie-a.

Not sure if that will change everyone's opinions..

Nope, I've only ever heard your pronunciation and would pronounce both spellings the same. I'm surprised anyone would think "lie" rather than "lee".

ZippyLilacStork · 26/11/2024 09:45

My cousin was Nichola, with an ‘h’ somewhere along the line that got changed I don’t think they even mentioned it the h was just quietly dropped by the time she was a teenager.

I would have used the pronunciation you say for Aaliyah. It's a nice name and I think sometimes shortening it is no different from calling Samantha 'Sam' and doesn't merit changing it permanently. At first I was thinking you had used a deliberately weird spelling and now wanted the normal one, I shouldn't have jumped to that conclusion.

I met someone with a daughter named "Felyzittee".
I wonder when the daughter will change her name spelling officially.

Aaliyah is an accepted spelling - I'd assume this spelling over Aliya, but perhaps not with the update on pronunciation.

Muthaofcats · 26/11/2024 14:29

I would just assume aliya was someone who just didn’t know how to spell Aaliyah ?
