toilet training help needed

queenofpuddings · 28/04/2008 15:37

My DD is 2.4 and we have been toilet/potty training for a week now.

she has no problem sitting on the potty/toilet albeit with the help of a bribe, but she won't do anything in it.

She is holding on to her pee and poo instead and we are having accidents. She lets me know when she wants to go.

I am prepared for this to take a while but was wondering how would i get her to actually do something in the loo/potty.

Advice appreciated.

Does she respond to blatant bribery? A toy my Dd wanted was put in view but out of reach. She was told she could have it when she'd had a dry week. It worked for us! We also gave her a treat (like a chocolate button or something)after each successful trip.

too late for that now as she gets a treat for sitting on the loo, i have tried to withold it until she does a pee but because I started with atreat to get on the loo in the first place it means nothing to her.

maybe the toy thing might work, if i put it on top of the cabinet in the bathroom

Random fact alert....

Did you know that blowing bubbles relaxes the muscles in your erm... bottom

Its true! (you are trying it now aren't you?!)

So sit her on the potty with a pot of bubbles at about the time she is due a poo.

She may surprise herself

Best of British!

we did 1 sweet for sitting on potty and 3 for a result...keep persevereing, sure she'll get it

ps my ds also 2.4, he did hold it in at the start...i used tv and dvds to sit him on the potty for as long as poss...i would turn tv off if he got up for too long. once he had done a couple of wees by accident and then got more sweets and praise i seemed to click.

Poos still a bit hit and miss (3 weeks in), but i have heard it takes longer for poos.

If she hasn't done anything in the potty/toilet for the full week that you've been potty training, I think it's fair to say that the training is not working.

Forget it for a month and start again. This time:

  • take nappies off and don't put them back on except for bedtime. This way, she won't be able to hold on to her pee. Prepare to stay in the house for the first 2-4 days.
  • treats are only for when she does something in the potty/toilet

Until then, get a book about a little girl (or even a teddy) learning to use the potty and read it together often so she gets used to the idea. Take her to toilet with you every time you go. When she is with kids she knows (close to her age) who are potty trained, take her to toilet whenever they are going, so she sees other kids do it.

hi nell might try that.

Hi cote d'azur, tried all you have said nappy off, stayed in the house a week, got 3 books on teddies, she comes with me when i go to the loo and even flushes for me and waves goodbye to the peepee as its flushing away, she even tries to wipe my bum etc my instinct says even if I was to leave it and try again in a month or longer we would have the same scenario.

What we done with our little boy was to put a little bit of toilet paper in the toilet and made it a game to see if he could wee on it (he wee's sitting down), could be worth a try.

Nell, you are a genius, the bubbles worked, after 2 weeks of perserverance she finally peed on the loo.
