2 year old hasn’t had a poo for 5 days

Hey guys, my 2 year old DS hasn’t had a poo for 5 days, usually he does about 3 times a day so we are very worried. The GP gave a laxative sachet for him, we will be giving him once a day, it was the first day today of giving him. Does anyone else have any idea what we can do? He’s very irritable and he had a stomach ache last night. He has a lot of wet nappies. And he’s eating a lot like he always does, but no poo since 5 days. It’s so worrying.

You can buy adult suppositories over the counter but not sure about child size. Might be worth asking at a pharmacy?

I’ll definitely go to the pharmacy and ask tomorrow if he hasn’t had a poo by then

You can get child glycerine suppositories and they are amazing.
Get some Vaseline on your finger and get it right up there.
Leave the nappy off and massage the tummy and be on an old towel.
The doctor explained it's not about diet at this age but more about how mature the gut is... or isn't.

Dd once went 10 days, I know how worrying it is. A warm deep bath seemed to help her, she actually pooed in the bath but i didn't care!

The ERIC website is really really helpful. My DC is on Laxido, has been on it for a couple of months now. We find that if we don't give it they don't poo so we give it daily. They were on lactulose before but it stopped working and they got so constipated it was causing vomiting 😢

Thank you so much guys 😊 the thing is that DS is such a good eater, he eats so much. Is this a bad thing for him right now?

Have you only recently started potty training? Did this start by him withholding/not wanting to go on the potty?

We haven’t properly started yet tbh but the constipation started before we started putting him on the potty

Laxido

We gave it to him 3-4 hours ago, but it hasn’t done anything yet. I hope it does soon

Laxido is a gentle lax. As an adult I take them for my ownissues. I take a sachet before bed and usually by morning I'm ready to go. Once or twice I've needed to take for an extra day or two to get things going. They don't have a rapid or violent result either you'll be glad to hear!

You could try him on some prune puree? The baby pouches from Tesco are fab and ready to eat. My 7m old is currently weaning and let's just say.. Has been furiously trying to squeeze one out for a day or two. Prune puree for her dinner last night has brought on the most wonderful relief for us all tbh. Best 70p I've ever spent.

Hope your boy is feeling himself again soon xx

We had Laxido when my 18 month old was constipated. We gave him a sachet for 2 days before any movement- it does not work immediately but was very effective.

My now 30th month had been having issues with withholding and severe constipation. Days and days would pass without him going to the toilet. The GP suggested lactolose ( you can buy over the counter in boots). we now give him 20ml every day, and it helps him go regularly. It isn't medicine as such, just a sugary syrup that helps soften and loosen the stools. I would recommend that if he hasn't managed to go in the next day or two. It works fairly quickly. We just added to his bedtime milk, and he drank it with no issue.

Our DD suddenly started getting constipated sometime when she was 2…started giving her lactulose syrup daily which kept her regular ish. Then grew out of it around 3.5. Only thing we vaguely connected it to was white flour…bread / chapati / pancakes etc. Switched to brown flour which may have helped! Not sure! But 5 days is not so long for a 2 year old. Always worth seeing medical people to be sure!

Good luck!

How are things OP? Any movement yet?

halloumidippers · 16/11/2024 14:24

any joy yet OP? My son used to get constipated a lot. The laxido works best if given BEFORE the constipation starts (which I appreciate is not helpful but keep going with it after things get moving!!)
Other things used to be a nice warm bath (take a lil fishing net with you 😱) and warm fluids. Reduce dairy and eggs. If he's on cows milk, water it down with a bit of hot water in the top.
