Best nit prevention?

My DD has started pre school and nits are in there already, she's got a lot of long thick hair so I'm looking for the best sprays on the market to prevent her getting them. Would welcome any all suggestions please?
I'm itchy even writing this 😂

Someone recommended vosene but I haven't tried

Rocknrollstar · 15/11/2024 17:08

Definitely leave in conditioner. If the hair has product on it the nits can’t cling on. Also, she needs to wear her hair up. My DD used to have two plaits pinned on the top of her head! HORRENDOUS BUT NO NITS.

We always have hair up but when I pick her up it's a loose dangling ponytail by the end of the day 😂 I've just been looking at some leave in conditioners so I'll order them and some hair styling gel as well to do some tight plaits!

Use tea tree oil shampoo.

Yes to hair up. You could try a bun (net and all!) to keep it firmly in place.
In my daughter's nursery they used to put perfume in the hair to prevent nits! We couldn't understand why she'd come home with such a strong smell in her hair so we asked and they confirmed it. And to be fair, she never once had nits at nursery, went to school and got them in 2 months!

Apparently it’s more scalp to scalp contact where they spread, so trying hair up may not make much difference. No harm though but don’t get too stressed about it.
We’ve been using tea tree shampoo which seems to be working. This one. It’s on offer sometimes.

Spray a mixture of tea tree oil and water on their hair each morning and keep it in plaits.

That's the brand I use and she uses the same as me so I'll just get this scent, I'm open to a bit of tea tree myself because I do NOT want it 😂

Thanks all, will get some tea tree oil and a spray bottle, it is a scent in her detangler spray she has but it's not super strong!

Hair tied up completely- so a French plait rather than a ponytail. Tea tree oil diluted in water, in a spray bottle, spray after last rinse at the end of a hairwash, hairspray can also work if you want something between washes.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/11/2024 19:13

Shorter hair, plait it and tea tree spray.

mindutopia · 15/11/2024 19:42

Tea tree oil. Smells horrendous but works and keep hair up and short enough that it’s not going everywhere. And sad to say, but keep her away from the nitty kids. We have two in my dd’s class (she’s in Y7, it’s been going on a long time!) who have constant nit infections and long hair that is never pulled back. 😩
