Is my child dyslexic?

My DS is 7, Year 2. He is doing well at school but I’m starting to notice some difficulties. For context his father is dyslexic.

For example, he constantly muddles “who” and “how”, “was” and “saw”. He also mixes ‘b’ and ‘p” and writes some letters backwards. I’m not sure how he compares to his peers, I will be talking to his teacher soon (standard Parents Evening appt).

Does anyone have any experience of this? I know that dyslexia can be mild to severe, my DS seems mild at most to me as he reads well, but makes these mistakes. Am I right to raise this or am I making a fuss?

Thank you

I don’t think this is too worrying. My Dh is also dyslexic, and both my dc have done this at this age. Not to the point that they can’t read properly, but just enough that they stumble occasionally. It’s worth mentioning at parent’s evening just to check with the teacher, but I think a degree of this is still quite normal. My eldest is now 11 and not dyslexic and reads a lot. But if the teacher has noticed and is concerned, I’d push for an assessment.

Do keep an eye on his eyes though. My eldest did start to struggle with reading about 7/8. It was her eyesight. Once she had glasses and could see properly again, she shot off with rea.

Even if you get told "not a chance he's dyslexic" given the family history, if you start seeing more traits as time passes, ask again.
I spent 4 years asking teachers, including a screening test, all saying no, but DS absolutely is dyslexic (like me) and we have the educational psychiatrist testing to prove it.

I wouldn't worry too much yet - but keep an eye on the spelling, especially if they do spelling tests that include any previously learnt words - dors he have a clue. DS could, with lots of effort, learn the weeks spellings well enough not to have to stay in at break. But if you asked him the following week he'd get 1 or 2 right.
