Ambre Solaire factor 30 here, am taking factor 40 to US though I always buy a separate face one too as they are often less greasy than regular suncream

PinkTulips · 27/04/2008 22:38

lavera factor 30 non allergenic stuff for ds as he's ridiculously sensitive to the sun. he got so badly burned on his face last april on a not very sunny day that he blistered so ever since i'm a bit anal about him.

dd on the other hand has my skin so just gets a bit of aldi own brand factor 15 as i can't afford the lavera stuff for both of them

Starlight, none of the reports you link to have any real evidence that the use of sunscreens is linked to the increase in rickets. They seem to suggest that most new cases of rickets are in the Asian and other dark skinned communities and the causes of vitamin D deficiency are complex. It isn't likely that excessive use of sunscreen is the cause and nobody appears to be seriously suggesting that it is. I repeat, skin cancer is statistically far more likely to be a risk to our children than rickets, and personally, I know that I would be extremely irresponsible NOT to use it on my children.

Minimum of factor 30 for my girls. They have sticks of total sunblock for their faces too. I'm not too fussy about brands, go for BOGOFs, but hate the blue stuff with a vengeance- it stains all their pretty summer clothes!

jaynz · 28/04/2008 00:26

I use Dr Hauschka too, I find it really good, lasts for ages and the titanium in this one is plant derived I think. DS is as white as paper, and we don't have much ozone in NZ! Doesn't smell too yuck either, and isn't sticky or greasy

Gingerbear · 28/04/2008 00:43

Bergaderm mousee SPF 30.

After my dad had a melanoma removed on Friday, and his consultant said the main cause of skin cancer is sun exposure/ sunburn before age 20, my two will be slip slap slopped from now on.

nooka · 28/04/2008 03:45

I've found some great spray on stuff from Neutrogena which feels cold when you put it on and doesn't have to be rubbed in. ds actually allowed me to do him without a huge paddy. Fab! I use high factor because I'm very pale and also moley. Plus I don't actually tan, so not worth the risk.

The rickets issue is predominantly in Asian communities north of Birmingham and can easily be avoided if you are worried with vitamin D supplements.

Aveeno Kids 50

(and there is a problem with Rickets in winter babies of all races here)

alipiggie · 28/04/2008 04:16

Normally a mineral based one without parabens in it. We put it on everyday here in CO as we're Mile High. So even my face cream has spf 15 or higher.

UnderRated · 28/04/2008 04:22

Which brand Ali? We use sunscreen everday and I would like something less harsh.

alipiggie · 28/04/2008 04:28

Earth's Best has a great one . It's much thicker because it's mineral based mind you. I have discovered that the Neutrogena - cool spray has no parabens and it's a spray on. Much quicker for little people.

UnderRated · 28/04/2008 04:47

I think Aveeno is paraben-free but will look out for Earth's best too. Thanks ALi

Ambre Solaire Kids spray 40+
I use it too cos dd invariably puts some on my face when I do hers.
I am NOT keeping my dd away from the little sun we get in England! We were outdoors practically all day on Saturday. It was absolutely gorgeous, reminded me of home and my own childhood

hanaflower - P20 now have both UVA and UVB protection in, though not sure 20 is high enough for fair skin if say on holiday in spain.

Piz buin have always had both uva and uvb protection

I use factor 20 minimum, always look at the back of the pack for the 'star' rating on the UVA and UVB. I prefer to get a brand I recognise, purely because I'll know how much effort/trauma it'll take to get two children to stand still long enough for me to get it on One summer we survived purely because of the clear spray on stuff from Ambre Solaire. My daughter was old enough to know she needed sunblock, but not old enough to sit while I lobbed it on properly. Thirty seconds of fairy twirling while I sprayed and a tactical pair of Adam Ant-esque new romantic-face-paint-block stripes on her face and we were usually good to go

When my daughter is in school on a belting hot day I use the 'all day' stuff from Boots, but be aware that 'all day' is only six hours

MrsMattie · 28/04/2008 18:08

Boots Soltan Kids (I think it's factor 40?). I would never go lower than a 30 and my son is mixed race.
