Full fat milk for 4 year old in a bottle!

Please no judgement. My daughter - just 4 a couple of weeks ago - still drinks whole milk. Guzzles it to be honest. I cannot get her off her bottle. I have a couple of questions.

Should I have switched her semi skimmed a while ago? I’ve only just realised if doesn’t matter anymore.

The bottle- she drinks milk from it in the evening and in the morning. She loves it. She is not ‘babied’ in any other way - dresses herself head to toe every morning, is incredibly chatty and will walk/run for miles. Has been potty trained since just over two. Her teeth are fine. We’ve just had a check up - I was worried the bottle might be damaging them. But she loves this bottle. Does it really matter? Should I just let her have it?
She’s my only child if you couldn’t tell!

What’s the problem with drinking out of a bottle? She’ll probably give it up naturally when she starts school.

Ticktockticktockclock · 11/11/2024 20:22

Btw, you sound like a great mum. As confirmed by your dentist no harm has been done. It’s clearly not a big deal.
I’m just making a suggestion for changing it as you were looking for ideas.
I wouldn’t worry though!

My DD 4.5 still has a dummy at night and whole milk in her sippy cup before bed. She likes it and I'm sure she won't still have it aged 25. 4 is still so little, it really doesn't matter.

Exactly my thoughts.

You don't see many adults with bottles. And really, as it goes, there's alot worse things she could be having than milk.

Let them be little ..... cos it really isn't for long.

Full fat milk is fine unless your daughter is seriously overweight already. No more bottles, just throw them. Bottles will damage her teeth.

Mum5net · 11/11/2024 20:28

She’s the same as mine! Mine drank through night, too.
Now 25.
We moved to Tippy beaker x3 at about 4.
Drank 2pts each and every day until 6. Some days 4 pts. We used to buy 5 x 4pt bottles at supermarket on a Saturday and had to top up.
Recently had X-ray in A&E and doctor asked if she was a pro athlete as her bone density was so good.
No fillings.
can’t remember when she went on to semi skimmed.

Ithinkyou · 11/11/2024 20:28

Whole milk is best, and honestly, don't worry about the bottle. If her teeth are okay, it's fine. She will give it up eventually, childhood's short ❤️

@Morven7 why on earth are you implying that I cannot parent my daughter? How unbelievably rude. I posted for some support and advice, knowing it something that needs to change. My daughter, who is 4 and 2 weeks, can dress herself independently, write sentences, read cvc words and can blend sounds, she’s happy and social, all which is my own doing as a single mother. How absolutely dare you imply that I cannot parent her.

Okie dokie

DeepRoseFish · 11/11/2024 20:33

She’s only just turned 4. I don’t think a bottle twice a day is a big deal at this stage. It’s not like she’s sucking on it all day long. And definitely nothing wrong with full fat milk!

autumn1610 · 11/11/2024 20:33

I kind of don’t get the outrage over a bottle when as adults half of us are attached to a water bottle 😂 just tell her that Santa has brought her a big girl cup and that she needs to leave the other one out for Santa to take

MammaGisAF · 11/11/2024 20:34

Oh gosh this thread has made me feel awful. Is a sippy cup ok? Or is it as bad as a bottle?

NiftyKoala · 11/11/2024 20:34

You really need to get her off that bottle. Now. Being a parent means sometimes having to be cruel to be kind. Don't end up like my co worker who's son had all his teeth pulled under anesthesia at 5. That's a lot worse then a week of crying for the bottle.

this is actually so true 😅 just realised that I myself rarely drink out of a cup and insist on heavily iced water in a straw bottle 😂😂😂 I guess we all have our preferences

A sippy cup is fine. I don't even think a bottle is the end of the world anyway. Both of mine were off the bottle age 1 but I don't actually think it matters.

He had to have his teeth pulled out just because he drank from a bottle?

Betterthanitseems · 11/11/2024 20:36

Give the bottles ro santa for his reindeer and leave s big girl cup in return. We took the bottle off our son before he was 2,was hard for about 2 nights then grand he was fine. The milk reduced drastically too. Good luck

Lifeglowup · 11/11/2024 20:36

Full fat milk is fine. The bottle isn’t. Drinking too much milk can cause anemia.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/11/2024 20:36

For goodness sake. YOU ARE THE PARENT you are in charge.
Are you going to leave her to learn to read and write, potty train etc on her own
Children need guidance and instruction from their parents, you are the boss not her.
Take charge, if she screams the place down well too bad.

PortiasBiscuit · 11/11/2024 20:39

My now 18yo had a bottle till every evening until the teet fell to bits and then a sucky cup until she was seven or eight. Hadn’t harmed her.

Motherofdragons20 · 11/11/2024 20:39

My 4year old DD drinks full fat milk morning and night, she loved her milk, never really occurred to me to switch to semi tbh as she eats like a sparrow and I’m glad if the extra calories. In a cup though. The bottle needs to go. Put it in the bin, let her pick a big girl cup and deal with the fall out for a night or 2.

booisbooming · 11/11/2024 20:42

Just get her some insane light up glitter cup and she'll forget all about the bottle!

NeedToUnfreeze · 11/11/2024 20:44

The Santa idea is lovely.

OP, I hate to add another angle to this but brushing teeth after milk (especially warm milk) is not good. Milk contains lactose (sugar) so she should wait at least 30 mins, ideally longer, before brushing. The lactose thing is little known so an easy one to miss.

You sound like a great mum, don't let anything here wind you up!

I don't understand how drinking from a bottle for what max 10 mins a day could cause all of a child's teeth to fall out??

missgraciea · 11/11/2024 20:45

@Gettingbysomehow well no, as of course she is already potty trained, she can write read which is on the earlier side of ‘normal’ This is on the far later side of ‘normal’ I have been asking for ideas and some advice not a response that intends to make me feel like I’m parently badly. We are all just doing our best.

Yes the dentist said it was bottle rot. Sadly kids were mean since he didn't have teeth till the adult teeth slowly came in. Teased alot. It was the saddest thing. Kids can be mean.
