Apologies there are probably plenty of similar threads but I was hoping to get 'current' answers and ideas.

What is your 5 or 6 year old into other than video computer games. ??

Please be specific- what books, what games, what crafts

I have a boy who is becoming so obsessed with Minecraft and sonic. He does love Lego but it's waning and I am about to cut it down to 1 hour a day. Need lots of other 'tricks up my sleeve'! He also goes swimming, squirrels, scooting, im just looking for ideas for downtime at home.

Thank you for sharing

  • Lego
  • Board games we can play together like Uno, Shut the box, ligretto, yahtzee, tsuro (it's like a maze game, he loves mazes), colt express and things like that
  • He's really into maths/stem so have bought a few things of that nature for Christmas but can't speak for the success yet!
  • Yoto player (famous five cards currently v popular)
  • Magnatiles
  • Hot wheels
  • Speedtrack
  • Looking through the smyths catalogue and circling the things he wants is his current fave past time!

You'll get people on here saying their teenagers are only allowed 10 minutes of screen time a day and that a 6 year old should have 2 mins a day maximum. I think it's okay to have some time gaming at that age as long as its limited and they do plenty of other activities!

Would he play with play Mobil? There's some really good sets out there and less fiddly than lego so good for younger kids.

How about role play stuff is he interested in doctors, shops, etc? Play doh, kinetic sand, slime kits etc.

6 year old ds is into:
Drawing and colouring
Lego
Pokémon (he has asked for a battle ground backpack playset thing)
Cuddly toys and squishmallows
Those gem dig kits (I've got him a fossil one for Xmas to mix it up)
Marble run (the v tech sets are great)
Playmobil
Occasionally train tracks or car tracks
Hot wheels (especially the battery tracks where the cars whizz around)
Science kits
Minecraft (has some screen time on weekends, have bought Lego Minecraft sets for Xmas)
Puzzles
Playmobil

My just 5 year old loves construction - train tracks, towers, marble runs, cars and aeroplanes, bubbles, science experiments, walking in the woods with his microscope, cooking, treasure hunts, setting traps. Not very keen on anything that involves sitting still!

My 5 year old has never played video games. I don't know any children that age who have, wonder if it's a boy thing.

Mine is into crafts, drawing, Julia Donaldson books but any age appropriate ones would do (recently we've started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at bedtime). She's enjoying puzzles, Orchard board games and playing pretend games with Sylvanian families/similar toys.

She also has a tonie box which she loves and we listen to the daily podcast every day. I really recommend a Tonie box or yoto player to reduce screen time.

Thank you. He has a tonie box and we've read all the Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl. We are just reading Fantastic Mr Fox again at the moment as it's his favourite!

I would say video games are definitely a common past time for boys in his class at school (year one), most of them play Mario, Sonic and Minecraft at the least!

We've definitely let him play it too much recently and have now set some new rules.

I'm going back quite a bit. Mine was very techno-minded but was also very into music at that age.

Toys: Transformers, bakugan, any science type toys, robots, electrical circuit games.
Books: DS has loved dogman, cat kid, now Tom Gates.

My DS loves gaming too, loves a bit of Minecraft, sonic etc. he loved a series of books called super Rabbit boy. It's about a boy who loves gaming so a good crossover but gets off the screens.

Thanks! Really useful ideas
