How to get rid of the dummy?

DS is 6 months old, he has had a dummy since 8 weeks. He has it to get to sleep. We’ve recently moved him to his own room and whilst he sleeps through without a feed or a full on wake up, the dummy falls out multiple times per night which makes him upset and I now find myself getting out of bed to put it back in. I want to go cold turkey on the dummy but I’m not sure how? Does anyone have any tips? It sounds stupid but if I take it away, what happens then if he wakes up? Do I just soothe him back to sleep?

I haven't took my DS dummy away yet as he gets comfort at night drifting off and if he wakes in the night he pops it back in and goes straight back to sleep. I put his on a dummy clip but not one with a long cord. It's a short rectangle of fabric that he couldn't strangle himself with. It makes it easier to find. Though don't know if 6 months is a bit young I suppose. Hopefully this bumps for you to get some tips

6 months - let him keep it. He will still be teething and getting used to sleeping alone.
6 years - that’s another matter.

a tip i heard was to cut a little slit at the top of the dummy so the sucking sensation is reduced and less desirable for the baby.

He's not long from being able to put it back in himself. We got glow in dark ones and scattered in cot and she would just grab one and put it back in herself.

DD2 still has a dummy just for sleep and she's 2. We will take it away when she can understand a bit better, but it's been a great comfort to her, that and her bunny comforter mean she will settle to sleep anywhere, which has been very useful! We will do a trade for a nice toy and let her take the lead on it, probably when she nears 3.

DD1 never took to one, but she wasn't as sucky a baby generally whereas DD2 from birth took great comfort in suckling (and I introduced a dummy because I got mastitis that turned into a breast abscess and needed her to not be on my boob too much for a while).

Not there yet with my LO, who is a similar age, but a friend advised me to not worry about it too much provided it’s just used for sleep.

I’ve been advised- when the time comes, gradually introduce a comforter first alongside and then instead, so they have that for the sleep association. Obviously you can’t introduce them for a while for safe sleeping, so I’m just not worrying about it yet! Keen to see if there are any useful tips here though- my mum said she waited until I was 3ish and we had a ceremony in the garden where we handed it over to the ‘dummy fairy’ 😂
