Has anyone had a baby by sperm donor?

Hi all

I've got one 5yo daughter. I'm only thinking at this stage, not close to actively planning

I think I want one more. As im a single parent, I don't want a blended family (due to my own bad experience) so would want to do it alone again.

My thinking is that I would buy sperm and then inseminate myself as I couldn't pay for ivf or anything.

Has anyone done this? Tia x

Buy sperm from where, the Internet?

ThatOpenSwan · 07/11/2024 15:31

You can't buy sperm for home insemination any more - your choices are clinic or find a known donor (the justababy app is where people sometimes look). I recommend clinic route personally for safety and security. There's a useful Solo Mothers By Choice UK facebook group which will help talk things through and answer questions.

Yeah, from a reputable site

Oh can you not? I imagine a clinic would be so so expensive

Yeah, from a reputable site

How would you know it's safe though?

Do you have a trusted and tested friend who could help you out?

I honestly don't

Tbh I just thought that the website would test the sperm etc

I dunno, now I've slept on it, I doubt it'll happen

I think clinics now make it quite hard as they tend to IVF it instead of direct insemination. I have a friend who used all her savings to try it once. However some overseas countries do it differently. You could try Denmark? It's big business over there.

I went through the clinic route with donor sperm. I had IUI initially (less invasive, much cheaper) but after that failed I moved onto ivf which was successful. I know people who had success with IUI.

I also have friends who used a known donor, which has advantages and disadvantages (I considered but decided against). There are sites where you can make arrangements directly with men but when I looked there seemed to be a huge number of sleezebags on there.

Another option is to look at clinics abroad - far cheaper even when you factor in travel.

You need to do a whole lot more thinking and consideration before jumping into this.

Among many other things, a big factor for you to think about is does your 5 year old know who her father is? A second child wouldn't, unless you choose someone you already know to donate. You need to consider the impact on both existing child and future child of one knowing their parent and the other not.

I did have IVF using a donor. In my case it wasn't successful. That's another important thing to consider - how will you feel if you pursue and don't get the result you want. I found it emotionally crushing.

Lots of IVF clinics run free open days or online sessions where you can learn more about the process and ask questions. That would be a good place for you to start.

I don't think you can do that. I have 2 friends who have sperm donor babies but both went through clinic (I think that's your only option really)

Am happy to share any info about this route

Thank you very much

Honestly it does need more thought as it's not as easy as I imagined 😅

I'm sorry to hear that ivf didn't work op - hopefully you've managed to have your baby now? x

It's just me and my girl, she doesn't know her bio dad. I wouldn't want a scenario where one kid has a dad and the other doesn't, which is the reason for me thinking about this

I do want another one - I see babies everywhere and just want one more 😩

But at the same time, I'm a bit apprehensive of the process, and suspect it'd be far more costly than I thought

I think an iui done abroad sounds most cost effective

Forgive me for my ignorance, is it done in Turkey? They do everything else

I wouldn't want a known donor tbh

Congratulations on the success of ivf, i know its a journey x

I don't, it's just me and my dd. One mum on the school gates was telling, loudly, a story about a woman who had a series of one night stands to get pregnant. I remember thinking, I must really want a baby because I can understand her way of thinking

Again it's too dangerous 😳, just like using a site I guess

Seriously, look into Denmark. But closer than Turkey 😊

I don't know about Turkey, but I know people who went to Spain and to Denmark. Have a read through the donor conception boards on here - a wealth of useful information about the process home and abroad.
