Would you go full time?

Posted on another thread but posting here for more reach!

I currently work part time (24 hours a week over 4 days) and am considering going full time for financial reasons so we can hopefully move to a bigger house in 2 years (we are quite cramped and need more
Space). I find rushing around on school runs and being home with 2 x small children (8 and 2) stressful, although sometimes I do love it.

I’m torn between
a) going full time to earn more money for a more spacious home
b) going full time and regretting it

How do mums with small children find working full time?

It depends on your job, amount of flexibility, how much your dp pitches in with house and childcare.

I can wfh so it’s just about manageable but my job is busy and my dh also.

I don’t find it easier until the youngest is more independent about age 10. Even then not easy.

It’s fine if you are organised. It helps to have some flexibility in your workplace so factor that in. Mine and DH’s work are both flexible.

If you are going to do this then make sure that DH/DP takes on a fair share of all housework, kid stuff, life admin etc… Even if he earns more and his job is more important. Because if you’re not firm with that from the start you’ll end up doing it all, burning out and resenting your husband.

Lots of people will be on here telling you not to do it, you’ll never get this time back, you’ll die having spent more time at work than with your children etc… You will also get that all the way through their childhood. It will make you feel like shit. DH/DP will never have that said to them once.

Are you a single mum?

I recently went part time because I couldn’t hack it. Life’s too short.

id sooner pick up a bar job at night than go back to full time in my normal job.

If I did go back full time I’d need to hire the cleaner back.

How much more would you take home each month?

Im full time and I bitterly miss spending time with my kids. Then im shattered when I get home.

I'd wait until the 2 year old is older and more self sufficient if you have a choice.

The rushing around and school runs and bing at home with them doesn't get easier if you go fulltime, everyone is just tired and grumpier.

Do you need a bigger home or would a good declutter and some good storage / multi purpose furniture actually do the trick? I'd give that a go first as you'd have to do it if you were moving anyway
