Floor beds - how long do they last?

Thinking of getting my toddler a floor bed as she’s outgrowing her cot but I’m not sure if she’s ready for a normal bed yet (she is not yet able to reliably get on and off things herself so I’m worried she would hurt herself if she tries to get out of bed at night even with a bed guard blocking some of the side). I’m just worried it might not last for long so could be a waste of money as people seem to mostly use them for younger toddlers. If you used a floor bed at what age did you stop using it?

Also any suggestions on where to buy a floor bed are welcome!

A floor bed really is just a single mattress on the floor. You don’t need the fancy Montessori one. Just mattress on the floor. We had one in our room for both of ours. They are 6 & 11 and still sleeping in them, albeit the mattress is in a bed frame now. Very good value for money.

You really need the mattress not to be directly on the floor. Air needs to circulate under the mattress. I did this with a couple of pallets!

You could get her a single bed with a pull out bed underneath (a trundle bed). She could sleep on the pull out bed until she’s ready to sleep in the top one. My 4 year old has this type of bed and it’s really handy for when she’s sick, I can sleep on the bottom one beside her. Ikea have a nice one

We have a basic ikea flisat bed and chopped the legs off. Actually got it free on Facebook, just bought the mattress. She’s been in it two years now.

I just used a mattress on some bits of timber as slats for circulation but the trundle bed idea is genius as you can have the trundle pulled out when they move onto the main bed too so they don't fall too far. As well as being useful for sickness, visitors and sleepovers.
A couple of pool noodles under the sheet does wonders for keeping toddlers in place too and is enough of a buffer that they don't roll out.

We bought an IKEA Kura, which we hacked to be a floor bed.

She was 12 months. Now almost 3. It's still perfect. In another year or so, we'll turn it into a bunk bed, with her sister (16 months younger) on the floor bed section.

At a later stage, when they move into separate rooms, it will either become a standard single bed, or a bed with desk/den etc underneath. So likely last until she's a teenager. Bought second hand for £100.

Both of mine are in floor beds. Just IKEA mattresses with the slats underneath and no frame.
