What to dress baby in at night?

My bedroom temp says either 20 degrees or 19 degrees. So I've been putting my 5 month old in a babygrow and 2.5 tog sleep bag. She's been waking up in the morning with a stuffy nose, cold cheeks and her hands are cold. Am I not dressing her warm enough for night time?

What does everyone else do? My biggest nightmare is overheating

Not everyone agrees with this but cosleeping is one solution to this. I've always co slept with my two as babies and I wake up instantly if they are too hot or cold (I can feel their feet on me constantly).

To answer your question though you could add a short sleeve vest under the sleepsuit.

@Mumof2namechange as much as I would love to co sleep. I did with my now 2 year old till she was 9 months old. But that said 2 year old still likes to climb in our bed from time to time😂

I’d put a short vest and or a cardigan. I found their arms got cold. I didn’t use sleeping bags, I used the holey blankets

When baby sleeping bag age in winter, I usually did a short sleeve vest and then baby grow with feet over the top. Then sleeping bag.

You need to check her chest/back. Face and hands will nearly always be cold and not a good indication. Is she sleeping OK or waking up lots unexpectedly?

Pumpkinspicehalloween · 03/11/2024 07:21

I’d consider a vest. (Short sleeved then long sleeved as it gets colder). Feel the back of her neck to see if she’s warm or cold.

justsayso · 03/11/2024 07:25

I have the same worry, our room is usually colder than yours though.
I do short sleeve vests then long sleeve sleep suit. I also bought a second hand woolino sleep sack that regulates babys temperature so the worry about overheating is much reduced. They're definitely worth the investment - sized from 6m to 2 years, I think they're about £80 new I paid £40 on vinted.
Remember that if they're cold they'll wake up - if your baby is sleeping for longer stretches they're probably okay temperature wise. I won't say sleeping through haha! Mine doesn't and she's 1 this week!

I think you're dressing baby correctly, you're at the higher end of the 16-20degree temp to aim for so baby shouldn't need another layer. At that temp long sleeved sleep suit and 2.5tog sleeping bag is perfect. As others have said it's normal for hands and cheeks to be cooler but check neck and chest and if baby is waking up more frequently consider short sleeved vest as well.

It can feel like a bit of a minefield can't it!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/11/2024 07:30

I know this is the advice but we wouldn't be comfortable with cold hands ourselves. Seems odd.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/11/2024 07:31

I'd definitely add a vest.

Check that the baby isn't sweaty when he/she wakes.

FudgeSundae · 03/11/2024 07:36

People say babygro and mean different things. With the weather here right now I’d be looking at a short.sleeve vest, long sleeve long leg footy babygro on top and a sleeping bag. When it gets warmer I’d put them in a long sleeve no leg babygro under the sleeping bag, and high summer a lighter sleeping bag.

QueSyrahSyrah · 03/11/2024 07:39

I wouldn't add any more layers than a vest as it won't solve the hand problem but could overheat the torso. Our room is also 19/20 overnight and 5 month old DS wears a sleeveless bodysuit, long sleeve sleepsuit with feet and a 2.5tog sleeping bag.

His hands feel cool but the room is 19 degrees, he's not going to get frostbite.

You could try putting some scratch mitts on or pulling the sleepsuit sleeve flaps over if it really bothers you and she'll sleep with them on?

Threeandahalf · 03/11/2024 07:46

Mine is in a short sleeve vest, baby grow and 2.5 tog bag.
I think cold hands isn't an indicator of whether they are cold, it's their back you check.

Blu3Bell · 03/11/2024 09:19

At 20 degrees mine would be in a 1.5 tog and a long sleeve babygrow! Maybe look at some charts online for reassurance? I roughly use the tommee tippee temperature egg chart. When in doubt cooler is always safer x

She sleeps through the night 10pm till 7am. No waking in the night unless she wants her dummy back in

I'd say she's fine! She will soon let you know if she's cold 😊
