my 4 month old has always been a big eater for her age, I’ve tried increase the quantity she has but she still wants feeding every 2-2.5 hours. she had 8 ounces 2 hours ago and is crying until I gave her food. This can’t be right surely? She has 7-8oz every 2.5 hours on average and has 40 ounces a day! She only wakes once during the night for a feed at around 4am but will have 7oz too then

she’s 30th centile and maintained this so she’s not putting on too much weight but she is quite refluxy and sicky but not excessive amounts

maybe a growth spurt they go on for like a week of frantic eating then settle back down

glasshalffull0 · 02/11/2024 17:20

@rosydreams it did suddenly increase from around 33 to 40 so maybe yeah. I thought growth spurts only lasted a couple of days so that’s interesting to know thank you

I had one like that... he was downing 9 ounce bottles every couple of hours! I ended up starting solids slightly earlier than planned. He just had a massive appetite.. (and was a chunk of a toddler) but at some point it slowed and he turned into a whippet of a boy. She's probably having a good growth spurt and if she's only waking once a night, she's doing great!

She’s relatively small for her age, so my guess is trying to catch up. Just feed her what she’ll take and don’t overthink it.

HolidayNanny · 02/11/2024 20:59

As she's not overweight I wouldn't worry, just feed her when she's hungry.

FudgeSundae · 02/11/2024 21:02

Both of mine always ate more than they were meant to per the oz instructions. I just made sure I spaced them 3 hrs (for reflux) and stopped counting. Both were tiny when born so had lots of catching up to do.

glasshalffull0 · 03/11/2024 08:20

@mindutopia i did wonder if that’s what it was, she was born 75th centile then dropped to 50th then slowly down to 30th as we had BF issues and has stayed there ever since which would’ve been about 4 weeks of age. Her length is approx. 95th centile so she’s long and skinny!

@Sonolanona i keep thinking about weaning her a week or 2 early especially if she keeps increasing her milk at the rate she is now! Did you get advice to do it or just do it off your own back?

Do they still make hungrier baby formula? It was years ago but DS needed that and was still weaned early (with health visitor approval)..

modgepodge · 03/11/2024 09:00

I honestly don’t think weaning early will make much difference. The quantities they eat at first are so minimal and most people start with fruit and veg which are lower in calories than milk.

If she was BF you wouldn’t even know how much she was having, you'd just feed her when she was hungry. She’s not climbing the centiles so I think stop worrying :)

My DD was a 'little and often' baby and still is now at 18m.

If she isn't uncomfortable or being sick, just go with it. She'll let you know when she's had enough
