When did you stop putting your children in the supermarket trolley seat?

It says up to 15kg

I haven't weighed my daughter since she was 2.5 and she 15kg then, she's now 3.5 and tall for her age too. I still put her in the trolley seat because she asks

But it's getting the point where I'm thinking I'll have to say no, maybe when she's around 4

What are others doing? I talked to a friend a while ago with a child the same age and she said she hadn't even thought about the weight limit

With my eldest sometime during my pregnancy with my second because I physically couldn't lift her in towards the end, there's a 3.5 year age gap.
With my youngest around 3-3.5 because she's tall and I'm not and I just couldn't get her in there anymore!

What difference does that make with a young child?

You can use a pushchair then. Also, I used to clean trolleys back in the day in one of my earliest jobs - spraying off half-eaten rats / poo. No way my child was going to sit in one

When I knew they could walk around the supermarket without creating chaos.

Around 2.5.

I just put them in the main part of the trolley after that.

I'm struggling to believe people are putting six year olds in a trolley seat.

What's difficult about understanding this? DS is tiny for his age, at 6yo some three year olds were taller than him? He was born very premature. So fitting in a trolley isn't difficult for him. It's only happened once as the DC hardly go to the supermarket.

Why do they need to be in the trolley though? Can't they be trusted to walk with you and not running about the shop causing mayhem?

Unless I suppose they have SEN but wouldn't an adaptable disability trolley be better?

My 4 year old still goes in. He fits fine

So you’ve never let your child sit on the swings or play in the park?

mitogoshigg · 31/10/2024 15:26

When they didn't fit, dd1 was at least 4 as she was light, skinny and autistic so ran off, i used her reins harness to secure her in

It's just sometimes much easier, if you just need to get shit done.

No nagging to keep close/come here, no telling them to out X back, no need to check they're still with you, not need to hurry them along etc.

15kgs or not after they turn 4 whichever comes first. My three year old is tiny so still fits but at 4 she'll no longer be a toddler so I'll expect her to walk nicely. I wouldn't put them in the main bit of the trolley, if they stood up it could tip over and I wouldn't want their shoes where people put their food.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 31/10/2024 15:55

About 2 ish. Our local supermarket used to do tiny trollies for children and despite them being a fucking liability, it did make shopping a much more enjoyable experience for her, so she was more than happy to walk and 'help'.

WhatNoRaisins · 31/10/2024 15:57

When I couldn't lift them, think DH did it a bit longer. Same with swings.

YouveGotAFastCar · 31/10/2024 15:58

My 2 year old still goes in. He would happily walk around but would create chaos touching everything. Sometimes they have mini trolleys and then he wants to walk, but he'll fill it with random stuff we don't want.

He doesn't complain. He usually scans everything for me.
