Tongue tie operation for a 4 year old

Has anyone got any experience of this?
My son was born at the beginning of the first COVID lockdown (end of march 2020), and had a tongue tie. I raised it at his 8 week check, and it was thought that because he was feeding fine we didnt need to do anything about it. I raised it again with the health visitor during one of his checks, with the same decision. He's 4 now and its effecting his speech. The dentist raised it and offered a private referral.
Im feeling very guilty that I didnt do anything or push the issue harder, but as we were all in 'COVID measures' im not entirely sure anything would have been done anyway.
My question is, has anyone elses older child had the operation for it? As he's older, I understand its a operation under GA rather than the quick snip that babies have.
Thanks all 🙂

It can be done with a laser with the option of sedation by a dentist- my friend’s DS had it done recently. So you don’t necessarily need GA. But I’d always consult a speech therapist first.

Ah amazing. It was the dentist that referred to another dental clinic so I think probably it'll be a laser job then. How did it work out for them?

I'm so sorry this happened and wish more SLT were funded to train MW and health visitors and tongue tie practitioners of the issues with unresolved tongue tie.

Pretty well I think! It’s a school mum not a really good friend so I haven’t had the full run down but it was done over HT and the kid was back at school as normal and in my totally non expert opinion speaks pretty clearly ie no issues understanding him!

My DS had this done when he was 4. I had no idea and it was spotted by a dentist. We went to see a consultant at the hospital, and it was done as a day case the next week. He had a general anaesthetic and was fine after, he had the next day off school, but was fine in himself. This was over 10 years ago so all might have changed

My 7yo had his tongue tie cut my laser last month. Had it done on Saturday and was at school on Monday. No sedation needed but apparently it’s likely they would need it under 7.

Im really reassured that its not totally unheard of others kids are fine afterwards

My DC had his cut under GA at just over 4. I remember feeling furious as his TT had been identified very late (despite awful bf experience). He was completely fine afterwards, bit sluggish and starving hungry so he was spoiled rotten for far too manyeals afterwards;-)

Check with a speech therapist first, it's exceptionally unusual for a tongue tie to cause speech issues. If your child can't do tip of tongue to top lip, or lick their lips then the tongue tie may be causing it, but if they can reach top lip and lick their lips, it's very unlikely to be the tongue tie causing the speech issue.
